Hey Skinny, saw a skinny!

Hey Skinny, saw my first skinny of the year this evening coming home from work. Unfortunately, it was in a little towns city limits, but saw one none the less. Thought it was pretty early to be spotting groundhogs already, the temp was only a high of 54 I believe the radio said, but maybe that was warm enough for this guy. Sure wish they would multiply a little quicker around here so I'd have some to hunt!

Thumbs up

LOL The last few years my friends and I have been getting the first skinnys of the year by the second Saturday of March. But these cold temps and snow may push that back a week or two
A friend saw one out on top of the snow back in January. hehe
If it isn't too cold tomorrow, am going to try some new loads for the 222. There's a few hundred 50gr red prairie bullets in my inventory that need to get a workout.

I'll be darn. Never heard of groundhogs on the snow. I remember hunting them a lot when I was younger and only had a .22. But boy was that fun. They use to cause a lot of damage to soybeans here, but the coyotes moved in and I seldom see them anymore. I saw two last year during my to work comute, and one of them was right in a little town. The one I saw the other day was about 1/2 the distance and closer to my house. Maybe someday there will get to be enough to hunt again. Sure do miss it!
Good luck on hunting them this year. I'd like to try my .223 on a few sometime.

The earliest I have killed chucks is the third week in February. I think it was in 2001 when the temps were real warm here in PA. I have seen three so far this year but Mrs. Nature keeps messing up the warm weather here. Soon the shooting will begin.
