.30/40 Krags, again

I have found this really nice gun shop that is a 50/50 mix of military surplus arms and used hunting firearms. My focus goes to the military arms. The shop owner is a competitive shooter and offers attractive discounts to preferred customers. He has several very nice .30/40 Krags on the used gun rack. I really hate going into that shop because some of the guns appear to be orphans looking for a good home.

Decent Krags are getting harder to find and seem to be going up in price. They have one of the smoothest actions ever developed and within their limitations are fine sporting arms. Anyone else have a fondness for the Krags? All the best...

I don't own a Krag, but I've always had a hankeiring for one, maybe in the carbine form. What kind of prices is the guy geting for them -- or shoudl I say asking for them.

The Krags I saw were priced at $130, $160 and $400. The lower priced rifles will go quickly. All the best...

Range report

The Krag that had a hang tag of $130 came home with me and cleaned up to mint condition. The rifle is tight with perfect bluing and bore. Someone fitted a lovely walnut stock with some nice grain. I am thrilled with the original rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation like that found on a 1903 Springfield. It digested some reloads that were assembled 10 years ago with IMR3031 powder and 150 grain bullets.

Someone installed a 1903 front sight that is a bit high and lowers the point on impact. The rear sight needed to be set at 300 yards to print bullseye groups on an SR-1 target to 50 yards. This one is a joy to shoot. All the best...

There's alocal range/shop that has a sporterized krag in it here.

ok i saw you winch, but this one had the last 2 inches of the barrel get damaged, dont know the full story.

he choppe dthe barrel off just before the damage, and put a full mannlicher (SP?) stock on it and it actually looks pretty good.

I see very few anymore, but they are good rifles.

Most Krags for sale have been altered

The original rifles and carbines are mostly tucked away in private collections. Nearly all that I see for sale have been converted in one way or another. All the best...
