Another Police "Coverup"

Two Jersey City Officers Shot Inside Police Station

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A man about to be arrested for domestic violence opened fire inside a police station Wednesday night, wounding two police officers before being shot himself, authorities said. A sergeant was shot in the stomach and a rookie police officer in the back around 7:20 p.m. at the West District Police Precinct headquarters on Communipaw Avenue, said Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy.

Troy declined to release the officers' names pending notification of their families, but The Jersey Journal of Jersey City identified them as Sgt. Timothy Harmon and Officer Patrick Kirwin. Police said only Kirwin was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Several officers returned fire, striking Corey Harley, 27, numerous times, said police spokesman Stan Eason. All three men were in stable condition at Jersey City Medical Center Wednesday night,

"God was looking at the West District tonight," Troy said. "This is a situation that could have been a lot worse. These cops are the best there are."

Eason said Harley's girlfriend was with her three children at the police station making a domestic violence complaint against Harley when he showed up at the station. Harley, who has a prior record that includes aggravated assault and weapons charges, pulled a 9mm handgun when police told him he was being arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse, Troy said.

Officer Mike Gullace, a 38-year veteran of the force who had just three days to go before retirement, threw his body over the children when the shooting began to sheild them from the gunfire, Troy said.

Gullace will be honored for heroism at a City Hall cermeony on Thursday, officials said.

Whilst not an AMERICAN speaker of English, with it's own nuances/oddities I find the topic title a little misleading(?). My ,possibly incorrect, understanding of "coverup" implied that the persons reporting an event,or even "spindoctoring" it were engaging in trying to mislead their audience,in this case the public, in this instance the only information which could vaguely be construed a as "coverup" relates to the police officer who used his body to shield the children from a convicted and possibly homicidal killer. Hardly what is usually construed as a coverup. WB

the poster was making a play on words as you surmised about the officer shielding the children.

Knowing TBO's proclivities as I do, I half expected a tale about police providing a towel to some nude protester or some such.

This one's much better.

A genuine hero, that Gullace.

Course there are still questions,

How did the perp get into the station with his roscoe?

"Several officers returned fire, striking Corey Harley, 27, numerous times".................. another example of poor police shooting? Numerous hits, and the perp is alive? Geez.

Yeah, I am perplexed too. However, if I do have a question, I just ask it.............. Cryptology is not my field of interest.

I don't want to appear at loggerheads with ya, TheeBadOne.

Tis true, I have a poor opinion of the ability of most Law Enforcement folks to shoot well. Hope that does not present a problem for you. Many of us have a different take on a given news story. Mostly we are reasonably tolerant of each other's divergent views.

But thats it for me on these two threads.
