1917 Sporter

I was visiting my favorite gun shop and intended to look at a few WWII Enfields and Russian 91/30s that came in recently. In addition, I always look at very gun on the racks and stumbled onto a Remington 1917 Enfield sporter with a deluxe stock and recoil pad. The rifle was rechambered into .300 Win. Mag., was drilled and tapped and had a Baush & Lomb scope and a Timney trigger. The hang tag was $200.00, but I got it for $150.00. Someone did a lot of costly work on this rifle. Never had a .300 Win.Mag., bit I do now. Maybe I will load up some thumper rounds and have Adam sight it in. All the best...

The .300 recoil is not too bad. Wait until I have you shoot my 250 grain loads in the .35 Whelen.

Sounds like a nice find there Gil, let us know how it handles.

Some company, can't remembe rthe name though, (CAI possibly?) wa doing _alot_ of rebuilds in the 80's, rechambering p-14's and such to .300 winmag. This might be one of those jobs.

Yes, there are other rifles like that at the same type of prices. The used gun racks are full around here. I suspect a lot of older hunters are giving up their guns, stopped hunting or may have passed away and the family is selling them. All the best...

I removed the front scope base and the rifle is clearly marked U.S. Model of 1917 made by Remington. I recall the P-14s that you mentioned that were offered by Century Arms. All the best...

Gil, i didn't mean to say it was a P14, simply that there were alot done in that time frame, and whomever rechambered your new rifle, may have been the same one doing the P-14's as well.
My goof for not saying it in a better manner.

another question on 1917's, model 720's and model 30's. did they use two different floorplates on those rascals?

awhile back i got a 720 stock and the floor plate on the model 30 rifle i have is too short. does anybody make a floorplate stretcher?

i can't seem to dig up any info on this conundrum. hope to hear from you.

I have never see a Remington Model 720, but have seen the Model 30 and 30S rifles. I will pose you inquiry to my gun shop owner friend. He knows a lot about these things. All the best...

Any competent gunsmith can do the floorplate/trigger guard straightening on a P-14 or 17.

I'm not sure why one would want a P-14/17 floorplate stretched Never heard of that one

I have a really nice M-1917 Sporter that my brother in law left me when he passed away a few years ago. I remember when he bought it and started working on it in the 1960's, I killed my first "rifle" deer with it in 1970, it was rough looking then. Ears ground off, original blueing, Redfield scope mount, original stock cut down. Now it has a deep blue finish, Warne mounts, Fajen stock, etc. I have seriously considered having it rechambered to 300 Win mag, but I'm not sure if the barrel is long enough to get everything out of the 300 Win Mag. My brother in law cut it to 24 inches.

The rifle shoots great and looks great.

I managed to sight in this military sporter in .300 Winchester Magnum today. What a rifle! When I touched off the first round, other shooters on the line stopped firing to see what was making so much noise. It grouped very well with a 24-inch barrel and this is clearly not a casual plinking rifle. All the best...
