22 people gunned down at Virginia Tech

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416/..._tech_shooting

This is a sad day for gun owners, and a really sad day for America. Too bad none of the kids were packing, but that would be illegal on campus probably.

Which is exactly why school and workplace shootings will continue. No one can fight back.

What I want to know is how the shootings occurred two hours apart and the campus police weren't on high alert already looking for the shooter. They had 2 hours notice before the second shooting occurred. I guess I'll have to wait until more facts are revealed before I find out some answers.

First this is an awful tragedy. My thoughts are with all the families and the students. It's terrible.

Second, you have to know that every anti-gun person in the country is going to jump all over this. One of the first stories I saw about it made mention of Virginia's "lax" gun laws very early in the story.

As though stronger gun laws would have prevented this. People who decide to take their hurt, anger and frustration out on other innocent people aren't concerned if they can have a gun legally or not. If the shooter couldn't have gotten a gun legally, which to my knowledge no one even knows if he had his gun legally, he would have gotten one some other way.

It makes me mad that every time a tragedy like this occurs they blame it on lax gun laws. Let's place the blame where it really belongs, on the crazy person who was firing the gun at blameless people who had done nothing to him.

We are all shocked and perty sombered over here. We are praying for those folks...alot.

There was a couple "valley girls" talkin on the local channels this mornin about how lots of students carried guns and they were easy to get here...blah blah blah.
They were more than likely peta members takin advantage of the situation. Pisses me off to to end.
Not to mention the New York governer crap sayin that Virginia was one of states that sold zillions of illegal guns....we just not a month ago killed a bill that prohibited gun sales at gun shows.
Our state is now ruined as far as guns go....we'll wind up like England over there. If we don't have enough...let's see here...use polite words Red...large round objects to stand up fer ourselves to apologize fer somethin we did not do...I am sure the round objectless idgits in our government will grab our gun laws by the throat and choke em to death.

Oh I can hear it now when the media gits a hold of that bombed bill and all that crap. Good Lord...like it aint bad enough that this happened...

I'm personally appalled at the students that the media has been showin on the news. Look at em....does it really look like they are devastated? Distraught? Any friggin thing that involves emotion? No....they probaly got paid $500 for their precious interviews.

As far as the way the school handled itself...so far I can only think that they did what they could. I don't blame the school and I think that common sense aparently went to hell in a handbasket again.

Local folks have opened up their homes to families who are tryin to get there and cant get room & board nowheres. There's more friggin media there than families at this point. I live about an hour and 1/2 away..I would open my doors too but I think that the surroundin counties got that covered.
Watchin the press conference now...they are hammerin the police chief...I hate the news....they enjoy their job way too much.
The revel in the fact that there is a new story instead of givin a dam about the people lost. God forgive em....and God forgive that man for killin all them people. I sit here with my lil Lilred playin with her Dora doll and thinkin of her future...and how sad it is to raise a child for all those years and you send em off thinkin they are safe...and you turn around and you get a call sayin they are gone.
I will even say a prayer fer the gunman...cause he'll face eternal hell for what he done...may God forgive him...cause I spect wont nobody down here will. He took the easy way out too...which makes me madder an hell...but even more the reason to pray fer him.

If you believe in God, the gunman is in hell right now and prayers aren't going to do him any good. Save the prayers for the innocent dead people that might be waiting in pergatory if they didn't go straight to heaven. Why is it that there can never be somebody carrying concealed at the right place and time when these things happen. I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of altercations that are avoided by people carrying concealed, but it never seems to happen when these national events take place.

Does anybody know what type of firearm this guy was using? With the number of people he killed, I am really wondering about what type of gun it was. I just don't understand how this guy killed so many people and wounded so many more. Maybe there was only one way out of the room/building. I have no idea.

Lilred, I hear you about the little one. My daughter will be born in 2 days or less because if she isn't born before Wednesday morning they will be inducing my wife at 9:00 am on Wednesday. I'm using my prayers for that too right now. Like you, I wonder what the world will be like in 18 years when she will be going to college.

Fabs,
Looks like it was a 9mm...he had "alot" of clips in his vest.
I think the campus was on lockdown...so once he got in..he..or nobody else could git out. There is also mention that he chained the doors shut. Not only that, those classrooms aint your ordinary school classroom, there's alot of kids in each one and they are large.
He was described as Asian.

Lilred

I won't quote your entire post. But I wanted to say something about the lil Lilred part.

I was sitting around a few years ago after a couple of Rusty Nails and in a reflective mood and the thought crossed my mind about the times we are having and how the future sometimes looks bleak.

I wondered what my Grandparents and Parents thought about their page in history. Like why did we have children to bring through these troubled times? I can understand your apprehension concerning the little cutie pie. I have been through this situation twice when 2 of my kids were in the first sand box excursion. I was not a happy camper. I think back also about how my family gave up practically everything they had to get us away from the tyrants in Germany.

We can only hope and pray our children will always be safe. I am sure my Grandparents and Parents felt the same way about our childrens safety and well being as we do about ours.

I loved my one Grandfathers way of thinking of life. He always said, "everyday is Christmas and every night is a Saturday night."

We can only offer our children so much solace and protection, the rest is in Gods hands.

Bless you and the little one.

Best wishes, Bill

Thanks Billy...ya know..yer right and I feel much better now, I think. Sometimes ya caint help but wonder though.

After all that...i was watchin the news on my lunch hour..it was abc news now...and that stupid, uneducated, arrogant, gooberish, clown lookin, loose-tongued devil woman ( i was so mad I fergot her name...sorry ) was ramblin on bout the shootins and she piped out with " In Virginia you can buy any gun without a driver's license."
I kid ya'll not, I out fell out in the floor. I wrote the most hateful email I could muster to that idgit and her goober writers.
Ignorance is as rampant as seed ticks in a hay field.
I cannot put into words the fightin mad that come out of me today...lol. It ruined the rest of my day.
How stupid...I'm sorry but I caint git over how stupid..good lord...that woman got bout as much sense as god give a good rock.

Was it legally possible for this shooter to have purchased a gun in Virginia without being a citizen? I hate to even half admit to wanting a common sense gun law, but to me this seems to be one that should be on the books.

A “common sense” law would not have worked in this case, unless it was a law that allow people to carry to protect themselves. I say this because, according to different news reports on today, the shooter met ALL state requirements to buy/own guns legally. There is the question as to why the s/n was filled off of the gun/guns.

I agree Allen. I just never realized with all the BS laws we have to conform to here in Michigan, that it was legal for a non - citizen to purchase a firearm anywhere in this country. Especially after 9-11.
But again, I cringe at even the thought of "another" gun law

I don’t pretend to understand our immigration laws. I was born here and never really needed to know them. I heard the shooters Green Card was renewed in 2003. I live in Tennessee and work with a Russian that has a Green Card. He has also lived in Texas and California. While in Texas he bought several hand guns and believe it or not while in California he bought 2 AR15’s, all legally. He can buy as many guns as he wants (i.e. his wife will let him have) here in Tennessee.
