Another yard sale gun. Maybe 2. A question

Got an ol S&W 916 pump with a slug bbl...pistol grip stock and regular as well as 9 boxes of slugs and a couple boxes of buckshot.. Mostly the good sabot slugs too Fed Premiums. Was a fellows bear gun when he rode into the mountains. He said too many grizz so it just ain't worth it any more. If ya shoot one they put ya under a microscope Paid a 100 bucks. He also has an italian copy of an 1860 Colt 44 for sale. Wanted 75 bucks and it was unfired. Still has it. Is it worth it? I know nothing of that blackpowder stuff. I'd only buy it for resale. Anybody have an idea of the value??

skeet,

I do not understand the "too many grizz" statement. IF he had a right to be where he was, then so what? WHAT does he carry NOW or does he keep out of grizz country?

I do not like the Colt M1860 because I think the M1858 Remington New Army is a better gun then (circa 1861) and now. If it is for resale, grab it and sell it to someonw who never saw the Remington.

Well Adam

What he meant was that there are way too many grizzlies in the area he traveled in. It is dangerous at times in the right(or wrong) places. If you shoot a grizzly the darn thing had better be chewing on your butt before you shoot. The darn things are on the ESL and the gummit is all over you like stink if you shoot one. Boy got mauled by one last year calling elk for his father. Father killed it with an absolutely lucky shot to the carotid artery. They took 'em back up to where the bear was killed the next day to do a reenactment of the whole thing. The fellow just said he sold his horses and packing gear and said to heck with it. BTW many people don't realize that most of the grizzlies in this area are ones that were too dangerous to keep in the Park(Yellowstone) because they were not afraid of people and traveled the roads looking for handouts..or whatever they could take. They did a study here and while the average grizzly eats approx 80% vegetation etc in this area the avrage grizz eats 60% meat..or so the article in the paper said. I don't know how they figure that..I guess they go looking for bear poop..and check it Oh the guy and his wife both carry large bore handguns..44's I think. I think one of the reasons he quit was because his wife is not able to get around like she could. ..feared for her safety I guess.

skeet,

WHEN the gummint gets to be too overbearing in the grizz matter, I suggest SSS. That is simply: Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up. Nuff said and to hell with "reenactment scenarios." What bear? Play Mickey the dunce and pack in a shovel.

The S&W Model 916 is the same as a Noble. No one really understands why S&W ever bought Noble. Turn it over, don't believe you want it for personal use.

Well that all sounds good and swell. But it seems that you can't do anything without someone seeing it happen. And the darn bears (or many of them) have tracking chips in 'em. So do the wolfies. Ya just can't get away with nothing. The gummit is too entrenched in our lives now. Wait till they try to do away with the amendment limiting the number of terms a president can serve. We ain't never gonna get rid of these pesky gummit is in charge types.

Popplecop... Actually the 916 just resembles a Noble. The Noble really wasn't a bad gun. I bought them when I was young and foolish to use for duckin and goosin. I actually planted one or 2 in the marsh...from time to time. Never grew though. You could buy 'em for 5 to 10 bucks used. About what an ol 97 Winchester would bring at that time. I've shot a few 916's. Ain't purdy but they get the job done. Slug bbl'd ones are kinda hard to find.

skeet,

OK, the bear has a CHIP, so bury deep and get Outta Dodge! I have been 4 years out West and there ain't that many people around. If there are lots of people, let them "Smoke" the troublesome bear (s) and do the "reenactment scenario." I opt for the shovel and the track shoes. LOL.

Well it all sounds good Adam

If only the world worked that way for us good guys. I do kinda feel the way you do..but believe me..there seems to be someone in the area all the time....even here in the Least populated state in the country. And what you suggest is as they say...against the law. Violating the ESL is a federal crime...and the PETA types will try to drive you to Leavenworth..even if it is justified. That is why people here are so upset about the wolves(and grizzlies). They live here and have to live by rules set up by people that really don't have a clue...or don't care. They just want to make sure we have wolves grizzlies and as few people here as possible. I have cows on the place here and if the wolves attack them I will probably do as you suggest...SSS. I have had as many as 6 full grown wolves within 100 ft of my house at one time...in broad daylight. They are not afraid of people. But I don't like being put in a bad position by someone who just has their own agenda...and could care less about my concerns. Wolves eat a cow..it's a 1000 bucks gone..plus the young'uns they'll have in the ensuing years and their offspring. And the grizzlies are just as bad up in the summer grazing areas. The self same people that push the wolf and grizzly agendas don't want the ranchers to graze cattle on the leases either. Never ending circle. I know one ranch lost over 40 cows to wolves and grizzlies last year. They always used to figure one or two cows lost every year to depredation or natural causes. It really ain't worth doing the SSS

Here in the Buckeye we don`t have those big mean critters, but at time have bothersome dogs. I just lite them up with number 6 shot from a distance and sound like their yellin don`t shoot as they head for the next county. Would some bigger shot, like 4 bucks, do the same on those bigger critters??? Even if you kill one it will probly runn far enough away you won`t be bothered with it.

Buck Shot

That ol buck would surely kill a wolfie..but I wouldn't want to shoot a grizz with it. My neighbor uses my old 870 with the mag tube extension when he pack horses in the mountains. He loads 2 buck followed by 7 slugs. I guess the first two are for hurting him 'nuff to make him go away. He has a double bbl he used to carry but thought he needed a little more gun after having a few grizzly encounters. He even carries an old SAA in 45 Colt. Now that ol guy is a tough bird at 70. Still breaks horses. Still works for a state law commission. Wanted me to work for him...but I don't want to have to carry a gun. PITA. I carry one on the ranch here when out and about.. but don't want to have to carry all the time. Momma has her 9mm all the time

Skeet, May function well, but if it breaks they are terrible to repair. Finding parts is a hunt on it's own.

Heck Popplecop..

For no more than I got in it especially after the 10 boxes of slugs..If'n it breaks onea them parts companies will probably get it. Actually they don't pay 'nuff for good parts guns though. I'd take her apart and sell everything I could on ebay I'll betcha. But I did another yard/garage sale today. Report is on another thread.

Forgot to add that I went back and bought the 1860 repro.. He found the shooting kit that came with it...dinky little mould nipple wrench powder measure flask thing. Doubt I'll ever shoot it but it has to be worth that much,,,even if it ain't a Remington
