Starting back into bowshooting?
I am starting back into bow-shooting after sitting out for several years due to problems with my left elbow and right shoulder. I was wondering if anybody had any advice on how to keep from re-damaging them now that they are healthy again. I will be shooting (as soon as my buddy gets back to town and I pick it up) a 55lb Bear compound (OLLLLLDDDD bow)

Being a member of the ole xarts club I can relate. Would suggest that you start off at 40 or lbs of draw weight and work you way up to a comfortable draw. I hunt with these younins that have their bows set a 70 lbs and I have no idea how they even pull them back. When I went back to archery I started at 45 lbs worked my way to 60 and back down to 55 lbs where Iam today. I have the normal aches and pains plus damaged my right arm last year so I find that 55 is about right for me. Just took it easy and allowed the muscles to tone as I shot.

Start low, and build back up.. if you can afford it, look towards one of the modern bows with the higher letoff, get increidible speed at lower poundages.
I see no reason to shoot 70lbs with a modern bow.. you are just asking for trouple.. I have seen too many archers with bad shoulders because of the high weights... Also, stretch out before shooting and shoot as much as you can to get the mucles that you use for nothing else in shape.

Always wondered what the deal was with letoff on the bows. Unfortunately I have a 25 and a 35lb recurve, but since I gave my brother my 50lb bear back when I messed up my shoulder this will be the only compound I have to play with. They 35lber gives me no trouble so I am hoping everything will work out. If I could afford to buy a 40, or 45 I would, but the boy from my buddy is his old used one that is in great shape and I am getting a fantastic deal on it.

I describe let off like when you start to pull the string back you have to be a baby gorilla to get it moving. Once moving it gets easier and when at full draw you can hold it with 2 fingers. Nothing like it.
Thanks for the reminder Toxic, stretching out also helps a lot. |

ok so what has happened is that I got my Bear Shadow back from my brother (65lb, I didn't remember it being that danged heavy) and when my buddy gets back in town I am buying his black bear with all the bells and whistles to give to my brother.
I sure have missed this bow of mine. Shot it last night and within half a dozen arrows started grouping up at 20 yards. I shoot what used to be classified as Adult Compound Unaided. IE I don't use sights, releases, er squat. Just me my fingers, a nock and a arrow. GoodOlBoy

HeHeHeHe!
Lions, Tigers and Bears oh my.
Well oh Son of mine the Hoyt shoots better than Me of course. The new sight looks good on this 1985? + era bow and it will put the arrows in there if I do my part, and these days I need all the help I can get. Dose a bow that's more than 15-20 years old count as a traditional compound? Just a weird thought made me think of that one. This is the style of compound bow that I first fell in love with. The most important thing is it really looks like a bow. Not to large of a riser and a little bit longer limbs. You know it looks like a bow, not something out of a sifi movie. I know the new compound bows are very accurate, they shoot real fast. Faster than at anytime in history. There are several that I might consider someday when the time and money is right. They just don't look like the bows I remember. What can I say, I'm getting old. The reason I'm responding to this like I am is, I'm also getting back into archery (I blame GoodOlBoy, hehehehe, its all his fault, at least that's what I keep telling my wife.). I've always owned & shot recurve bows or longbows. I've shot various compound bows over the years but this is my first venture in owning a compound of my very own, and I think I'm ruint. What I mean is, I like it, I like it.
