tv program opened my eyes
to how oppressive, downright stupid and out of touch with reality that the California state legislature REALLY is...
![]() the program was about hunting Aoudad sheep in Texas with a .308 AR hunting rifle from Panther Arms; an AR specifically aimed at being a HUNTING tool, aimed at the hunter and hunting community by Panther/DPMS. why is the California state legislature so fearful of an AR hunting rifle? is it the pistol grip? the detachable magazine? the combination of the two? ![]() I think their paranoia runs deep... ![]() they need to come into the 21st century...

Thank goodness it doesn't have a bayonet lug or flash surpressor. Now that would be deadly

I would love to have a AR style rifle to hunt with.. but alas up here they are classified as restricted & can only be shot at an approved range.. sigh... maybe one day in the future, but I doubt it for us..

They are nice, but the AR-10T with its long bull barrel is impractical as it is very heavy. But it is the accurate AR-10. About the only use is in a shooting house where it can be rested. I sold mine about a year ago simply because it was so heavy. But, the magic cartridge is the 260 in the AR-10T, it is a very, very bad honbre. It is amazing how accrate a good match grade 260 upper, setup by a smith that knows what he is doing, can be in the AR-10.
The CA legislature is simply beyond stupid. You have a touchy, feely, petting zoo with the animals in charge. Reality, is some acid trip they were on 20 years ago. Ed

Don,
I am on the wrong side of age 65 and the AR just does not seem to be a hunting rifle I would ever use, BUT that being said, I see NO reason why they should be banned in Kalifornia. I prefer my Krags, Mausers, Enfields, Remingtons, etc., and others have every right under the Second Amendment to use a Matchlock, AR, or whatever they chose to employ in the hunting field. WHEN guns are banned on "Their LOOKS", then we are on the slippery slope where ALL semi-auto guns like my Sweet 16 and my Garand are destined for the smelter! I was issued an AR M16 in July 1965 while a GI and I did not like it then and like it less now. The world has turned many times since the .223 round and 1965. The .260 and other better rounds have moved the AR into the 21st Century. I fully support the use of the AR in hunting situations by those who would probably pass my M1898 Krags by as archaic. That is ok. It is an indvididual choice and a Constitutional Right that I fully support. Adam

I pretty much echo what Adams sez. I thought about it then discovered any AR in a hunting round was just too heavy to tote around. My only semi rifle is a BAR which shoots just fine. With that being said when THEY come over the hill after us I would like one then.

Adam: i was issued an M1 Garand first, then an M1 carbine when i went to the war in 'Nam, then an M14. i have no use for an M16 for combat in 5.56/.223...gimme the M14.
i am in agreement with you in all you say. i have a '93 Mauser, 1903 Springfield, savage .308 win. BA and .223 rem single shot for my chosen hunting arms.

Hehehe..... my co-worker hunting buddy one day toted his M1 Garand out hunting, using his 150 grain handloads.
He comes back later saying, "No wonder they went to the M-16! This thing is HEAVY!" ![]() He never served in the military - his number was never called back in the closing days of the VN War.... Like Adam, I prefer the old bolties for hunting. My one .223 rifle is semiauto, but not an AR platform. |

Quote:
My stepson brought his new girl friend over the other day. She just finish a 4 year tour in the Army and when she found I I'd done military time we got to talking about weapons issued. Of course, she had the M4. I told her I had the M2 Carbine as my issue weapon and she didn't know what one was so I showed her my M-1 carbine and explained that it was a semi while the M-2 was select fire just like her M4. The, for splits and grins I showed her the M1 Garand as used in WW2 and Korea and she said it was too heavy. I also showed her a 1903A3 Springfield and she said she definitely wanted to shoot that one. ![]() Paul B. |

We fortunately had the M-14 on my little ship in the Navy in the early '80s, not the poodle popper. When we had a security alert, I made sure I was 'fifth in line' at the armory, as that's the guy that got handed the M-14. The others got a Colt .45 pistol or a 12 gauge shotgun with limited ammo - I got three mags for the Big Rifle. I'd climb the Mack up to between the stacks, and I OWNED the entire deck. The others would sweep the passageways.
![]() I'd still like to get an M1A one day to complete my collection of 'issued weapons' from my Navy Days, but the price just isn't right. My view of the M-16 - great little varmint rifle. Not sure I'd want to go to war with it. But current tactical usage pretty much requires it and it's follow-ons. |

When I was in the army I was issued a m-14, but had no use for it in Germany. As for the AR`s, I never liked the looks of them eather and also didn`t think that they would be accurate enough to suit me. That said, I have to admit that since I got a Rock River AR it`s what I carry when coyote hunting most of the time. Acouple of weeks ago I got my first double on coyotes with it when 2 came out of the corn at the same time and takeing to running coyotes at a time with a rifle is something I couldn`t do with a bolt gun.
