hit and miss
I remember as a kid a fella my great grandfather would take his corn to to get it milled. He had an old hit and miss stationary engine (I believe it was a mccormick deering I don't remember for certain) and connected up to it via another piece of equipment to share the power was a sheller, and a grist mill. He would sell you cornmill, he would charge you to mill it, or he would mill it on the half. You could have the cobs or he would dump them in his hog pen out back.
Anyway I have long wanted to acquire such a setup and I think it's high time I start trying a little harder. Anybody out there have any advice on hit and miss engines? I am starting from scratch here, and just trying to find something to get me into the game. FYI I like OLD tractors too. GoodOlBoy

GoodOlBoy;
I don't know if this site will help you or not: http://bestfarmbuys.com/classifieds/default.asp I've used it in the past to get homing pigeons for dog training....took me a LONG time to find those homers! One thing I do like about the site is that it breaks it down by state, so you can check for things in your state (or a nearby state) without having to go through a whole bunch of ads. One thing I will say....check the site daily (or at least fairly frequently), as some ads seem to come and go pretty quickly....there was an ad on there last week for some quail (I'm looking for some for dog training) and after a few days, it was gone! ![]() Your post brought back some memories from my childhood....my Uncle raised hogs, and we didn't throw away much of anything...if we couldn't use it, it was fed to the hogs: spoiled milk, leftover scraps from breakfast, carrot & potato peelings....all went into the 'scrap bucket" and it went out to the hog pen in the evenings. Only thing they didn't get were meat scraps (those went to the dogs). My Uncle even got the out dated milk & ice cream from the local 'party' store a few miles down the road....I can still hear those hogs slurping up melted ice cream in my memories! ![]() Good luck....hope you find what your looking for.

There must be some old engine shows down there. That would be the place to look for a hit and miss. Even going to one is an experiance. We have a number of them scattered all over in Michigan. The biggest one at Buckley is a real experiance. They have all sorts of old time machinery set up and run by steam engines, old tractors and hit and mis engines. |

Darn GOB. They sold 2 of 'em at the farm auction I went to last Wednesday..one was a Jonh Deere and the other was either an Intl or a Case..don't remember which. I had one of the ol H&M Palmers in my first boat..I burned her up by forgetting to put water in the reservoir. The John Deere at this auction had a kick start pedal on it. My Palmer had a big ol heavy flywheel that you spun. Most of the time they sell pretty high. Hardly ever see 'em used anymore. I went cause they had a South Bend Lathe that went for 50 bucks more'n I would pay..

I ain't finding 'em around here anymore like I used to when I was younger. I REALLY wish I had had some foresight and had picked a few up way back when.
