A 4-14 would be good for antelope and varmints. A 3x9 better for woods and fields type deer hunting, IMO.
I think, based on owning a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, that you do NOT need a 50MM objective. The 40Mm Conquest will let you see well after legal shooting time. The 40Mm will be lighter, cheaper, more compact, and mount lower on the rifle- all good things. So, I'd suggest you take a good look at the Conquest 3-9x40, and save some money. It is a superb scope.
