Wife's First Pheasant Hunt
My wife has been hunting with me for near all of the 21 years we've been together. Since the kids are finally all grown up and out of the house, we have hunted even more so over this past year.
I applied for one of those California Dept. of Fish and Game "Women Only" pheasant hunts for her and received a reservation through the mail. We drove to the 100+ miles to Blythe in the wee hours on the morning of the hunt. After registration at the DFG office, we then drove some twenty-five miles to her assigned field.
As we sipped our coffee, another truck pulled next to us with a couple of guys, and as many dogs, in it. They approached us and asked if we would like for them to work their dogs for my wife -- our pointer had passed a couple of years prior, so we accepted without hesitation.
8:00 am seemed to take forever to come, but come it did. Not three minutes into the field, the dogs busted one rooster. Four minutes later, the second pheasant came to bag. I know that this sounds as if she were shooting fish in a barrel, but I can tell you that it was no less exciting for her than it would have been for anyone else hunting anywhere else! Her first pheasant hunt will be remembered with pride and fondness for the rest of our lives. You go, girl!
