As far as rounding up the 12 million illegals already in this country and shipping them back, it'll never happen. Just as a practical matter, who's going to track down 12 million people that don't want to be tracked down? The police? The Border Patrol? The National Guard?
Probably the best remedy is to make jobs unavailable to illegals- and to do that you have to make it not worth it for employers. But there's even more to it than checking SSI's for illegals, etc. Not too long ago, in the last immigration bill passed, a number of industries claimed that they couldn't find enough workers in the US, and they needed more guest worker visas to import workers. The companies (Microsoft was one) got what they wanted. Now, Microsoft can, and does, import software engineers from China and other places who will work for less than 50K, which American software engineers won't. It's cheaper for companies to pay lobbyists to get their loopholes passed, than it is to pay a competitive wage to Americans. See anything wrong with that picture?
