Petey, I hav'nt killed bucks with .223,but have with .218 BEE,25-20 and know of property owners who use .22mag wrf for inside of 100yds around areas to keep noise down.[Legal season, cartrige not]
Savage/Stevens now use 1-10 twist barrels, and Bullets I've used and loaded are: 53 tripple shock,60 nozler part,65sgk[not used on game yet].I have used w748,and when other powders are gone will be 100% varget[I just load 25 gr for 52-70 gr and go with it]which works well for highpower loads in ar.
I know we have blacktail deer, but I just can't bring myself to go for the behind the shoulder shot when you can have a going away neck shot, and drop them in their tracks.I've only crippled one buck in my life, and I was going for behind the shoulder in the oaks, and using a 7x57 mau;so I can't blame the caliber. On the standing or bed shots,I prefer to snipe themin neck or back of head.CAUTION: Head shots facing can result in shot off jaw and lots of work.I've seen 100gr .243 bullets fail on shoulder shots ie bone, and if shoulder shots and close range are issues I prefer a 45-70 which will go thru both shoulders and use bone for secondary projectiles;and much less damage due to velocity.
