Season is rapidly approaching!
As most squirrel hunters know the season (at least for Texas hunters) is rapidly approaching. My question to you is what are your plans? Will you scout or not scout? What gun, method, etc will you use? Come one people lets hash this one out for the heck of it.
I plan to hunt the small patch near me (Yes I have already scouted it) and perhaps the national forest as well. I will use my old H&R 20 guage in early season (Ya don't mess with what works) although I am considering an air rifle solution for late season after the leaves have dropped. My 22 has seen betterdays and even with a FIERCE cleaning with solvent it will no longer hold anything tighter than about 4 inches at 50 yards with any ammunition I try. I will drop out my salt licks for the deer, and perhaps an on demand corn feeder as well. It will all go in the same patch as where I hunt squirrel, which is in the flood plain right beside a creek that is one of the main tributaries of San Pedro creek (A tributary of the Neches river) AND about 30 yards from a low flat that pours water into the creek from springs that run year round. For ammunition I will use Remington SurShot heavy field if I can find them heavy dove if I cant in #6. For the 22 I had been using stingers but had considered going to the CCI 22 longs, howsomeever we know the 22 aint workin so thats out. If I could get a single shot 22 for anywhere near what I could get a good pellet rifle for I would stick with the 22. As it is with money as tight as it is I may go with neither and instead just use the old H&R all season long. Got to remember to have the wife make me a new squirrel bag. The old one gave up the ghost season before last, and last season I went without one. . . . BAD idea. Anyway what are you gonna do? GoodOlBoy
