I've messed with a few, sometimes in a military rifle, sometimes in a commercial sporter.
6.5x55, 7x57, 8x57, and 7.65x53 All of those are fine rounds for deer hunting. The 7x57 is a particular favorite of mine- doesn't recoil a lot, it just works. The 7.65x53 is also known as the 7.65 Belgian or 7.65 Argentine. Both countries used it. In a solid rifle, it's a fine cartridge, very similar to the 308 Winchester in performance. If you can't find cases for it (Norma makes them), you can make cases from 30-06 brass. The main drawback to the 7.65 as compared to the 308 is that the 7.65 uses a .311 bullet, which doesn't have the variety of bullets available that the .308 diameter does.
