Mounting a scope on Savage 24

I want to put my Leupold on my Savage 24 (22wmr/20ga), but eye relief is a squeeker. I must put the rear ring right on the back side of the turret snug agents it, and I am afraid this close to the turrets could do some damage.

What if I used two scope rings in the front section of the tube, between the objective bell and turrets, and nothing in the space between the turret and objective bell, would this damage the scope?

I have done this on rim fires for nieces & nephews to help with eye relief on full sized rifles when they did not have a youth sized .22
