The British .303 mags are the same problem.

My neighbor bought a couple .303 magazines for his MkIII SMLE at a recent gun show and they did not work. There is a difference with MkIII magazines and No.4 MkI magazines. I have seen MkIII mags that only worked in some MkIIIs. I have seen some M14 mags that would not work in M1As. The list goes on: Lots of G.I. .45 ACP mags are good and others work in only some guns.
