True, I think Zeiss should stand behind and repair or make it right regardless if it was East or West. It wouldn't hurt their image or pocketbook and would make customers and eventually put more than just money back in their company. If it is a West Zeiss product, I think I'd fight it, life warranty is life warranty, period (at least as long as the company exists, which is quite important nowadays!). I don't know if the East Zeiss carried a life warranty.

On the side, it does sound as if it may be Zeiss Jena (East Germany), it would have been a "different" Zeiss company with different policy which no longer exists. Or better put, I believe the old East Zeiss Jena is today Dr Optik, and Zeiss is Zeiss, or the old/always was, West product.

FWIW, in the old days (80's) you could purchase 3 West Marks for one US Dollar, and then receive 6 or so East Marks for each West Mark. Once you figure that out, you could buy East Zeiss products marked 900 Marks (East), for like $50 U.S. Waidmannsheil, Dom.
