Scope help
I'm looking to get a new scope for my .270 and was looking for some ideas. I don't want to spend more than $300 but I need a relatively rugged model with good light-gathering. A screw-on sunshade would be a plus. I like Leupold VX-2s and have seen some good prices on the Nikon Buckmaster. I have a Bushnell up top now and it's not a terrible scope, within it's limitations, but it's those limitations that have me wanting some new glass. I've just about settled on the VX-2, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking another, really good deal. Thanks.

Tater,
For an all around scope the 3 X 9 powers is about as good as you can do. For quality Leupold is the best for the money, at least in my openion. I got my first Leupold scope in 1968, yea I`m an old guy, and over the year have managed to put Leupolds on everything. I have owned some of about everything, but Leupold is the only brand I have not had trouble with and I now own over 30 Leupold scopes. Most are 3 x 9 Vari Xll, old style. I have a 24X that I use mostly for load development and a 36X that is on a .22 PPC that I use for off hand competition. I have them on rifles, handguns and shotguns. There are better scopes on the market, but I can`t afford them.

Tater,
once you've decided on a scope let me talk you into a lens shade. These are extruded rubber and are sized to fit scopes of every size(binos and spotting scopes as well) easily removable and soft so you can stuff them in a pocket on your pack or in your jacket. I had a friend really torque his scope good by jarring the optic lens end from the extra length created by a hard screw-in shade. I offer these though my hunt'n biz catalog but the info has not been entered yet. You can go directly to Clear Shot at www.lens-shade.com |

A good lens shade often does more good than most people imagine.
There are a lot of good scopes out there, and Leupold makes some very nice ones. The Nikon Monarch is an excellent choice, too, from what I have heard. I own a Burris Fullfield II, and I think I like that even better than my Leupold. I don't have enough miles on it to give you any reading on reliability, but the optics are quite good. You can get those, with either a pair of free binocs, or a free spotting scope, for around $200 in 3-9x40, or $300 for 4.5-14x42. SWFA has the combo deals. My own favorite "cheap" scope is the Simmons AETEC. AT $150, it delivers a very nice image. I have a couple of those. The only think I don't like about them is that the reticle is a little fat. But it's a good scope. |

HEY TATER
JUST GOT A NEW NIKON 4,5-14X40, SIDE FOCUS WITH MIL DOT IN THE MAIL THIS MORNING. TAX TITLE AND OLD RECAPABLE TIRE PRICE WAS 289.00 TO MY FRONT DOOR. MY OLD EYES WITH GLAUCOMA REALLY LIKE IT SO FAR. JUST DONE SOME RANGING DOWN THE STREET AND IT IS A PEACH TO LOOK THROUGH. CAN'T WAIT TO MOUNT IT ON MY 22-250AI. THIS IS A GREAT PIECE OF GLASS. "SCOPE" ONE OUT. I THINK YOU'LL LIKE IT.
