Within easy driving distance of Sacramento, you have access to bazillions of varmints.
So, I'd be scratching that new rifle itch with a Hornet or 223. Or something in between, like a Bee or a Fireball or a 222. Heck, EVERYBODY needs a .223! Ground squirrels, fox and coyotes - oh my!
