Military sporter Moison Nagant

I saw a sporterized 1891/30 Russian rifle that was in a sporter stock, had a bent bolt handle, Williams sights and a decent blue job. The problem was in the safety arrangement. The original safety had been altered, but not disabled and a small thumb safety was positioned near the root of the bolt handle. The concern was that the safeties could be manipulated in such a manner as to cause the striker to fall when the safety was released. I pointed this potential problem out to the shop owner. His response was to let the buyer beware. All the best...

there's a guy linked to gunboards.com, called "the boltman" that does custom bent bolts for mosin's and such, but i don't believe his have that problem with the saftey.

I'd be rather leary of the one you desceribed.

I have examined may sporterized military rifles and have noticed that some of the safeties are not quite right. The original safety is usually sound. The problem usually comes from replacement safeties that generally have to be fitted properly to be reliable and safe. I would not have an unsafe firearm around. All the best...

Gil,

I am surprised that the shop owner did not take you safety concerns seriously. I have not seen many sporters that I would even care to handle, let alone buy. It seems "Bubba" got to most of them and his handiwork is not to my liking. I would offer $5 for that Mosin as I need a boat anchor for my canoe.
