I just got back from a family visit to New Jersey.
When I flew into Philly and the plane was at the gate, I happened to turn around. The guy in the seat right behind me was wearing the neck ribbon of the Medal of Honor. My jaw dropped, and I whipped him the crispest salute I could muster. Somehow, despite the lump in my throat, I managed to say "Thank you, Sir." He nodded back and said, "Thank you. But I'm not an officer, just a Marine." I said, "Rank isn't in it. You rate a 'Sir' from everybody, everywhere, always." (In my estimation, so do former POWs)
