The M38 is a fine and handy woods rifle. I agree with Gil, it is far better to closely examine a surplus arm before buying same.

I handled a few M38 arms at the last local gun show; all were NRA Good and were priced about $150 per each. I have yet to get a nice (VG+) M38. I have the M91, 91/30 and M44 in 7.62x54R and will add a M38 one day.
