7.62N vs .308 win

Mil 7.62X51 (7.62 NATO) is specked to higher pressures than SAMI specs.

hnter,

I just read Gil's link and it seems there is not any standardization even among NATO nations about the 7.62 NATO round each produces.

I have heard various comments about the .308 Winchester and 7.62x51mm rounds. On page 56 of the 9th Edition of the book, "Cartridges of the World" it says, "Historical Notes: (for the .308 Winchester) Introduced by Winchester as a new sporting cartridge in 1952, the .308 is nothing more than the NATO 7.62x51mm military round."

Personally, I have had two Match M14s in my life and have several .308 rifles, one is a Remington Varmit .308. Among the M14s, Remingtons and two Indian .308/7.62x51mm arms, I have shot Factory .308 ammo as well as lots of US GI Ball (LC 69 and LC 70) through them all and have never noticed any problems, real or imagined. I think COTW is correct on page 56.

I have yet to see a box of Factory .308 Winchester caliber hunting ammo with a warning: "Do not fire in a 7.62x51mm arm." (Or vice versa) My M14s would have been non-compliant in any event since they shot lots of US Factory .308 Winchester ammo, they just did not know they were 7.62 NATO. Whatever.

Adam
