I never had the problem with my early 788s but they were for varmints and the objective lens on the scope required rings of at least medium height. I imagine that makes the difference.
The 788 was sure a lot of gun for the money. I traded off my 22/250 for a benchrest gun (this was when B.R. scopes were about as long as the barrel). This gun was only half as accurate as the 788 I traded off :-( You don't always get what you pay for.
