What's it worth?

Growing up, my mother owned a nursing home for vets. Ft. Meade veterans hospital is right outside Sturgis and is where she got her clients. Anyways, when I was about 12, a WWII vet gave me a 7.7 Jap rifle complete with bayonet. I don't know if there is any truth behind it, but the vet told me he took it off a dead Japanese soldier as a sovenier. The rife is in pretty good shape. I've been carrying this rifle around for 30 years, don't shoot it, not a collector and not really into historic military arms. I would like to sell it, but would like to know what it's worth. Could you experts give me a range? I would appreciate any insight.

It depends

Japanese surplus arms are the real sleepers right now. For a long time prices were depressed. I got a very nice Type 99 7.7mm rifle for $35.00 a few years ago. The local gun shop has them on the used gun rack priced at $100.00. Depending on condition and with the bayonet, that rifle would sell for about $150.00 around here, maybe a bit more. Hope this helps. All the best...

Don't forget the Chrysanthemum, an original, demands a slightly higher price. If you ever get the chance to read any of P.O. Ackleys books, read what he had to say about the Arisakas. He thought highly of them.

Best wishes, Bill

Billy is correct

The mum on the Japanese rifle receiver adds to the value. Most of the surrendered arms had the mum defaced. Thanks, Billy. All the best...
