I married a girl from michigan. It's been almost 30 years and my family still treats it as something of a mixed marriage. What I've found is an awful lot of what we think of as north/south differences are really more city/rural differences. My wife's from a small town in southern michigan. Her parents even used a lot of the words my grandparents did. There was still a great difference in the accent tho. When we first met I could only understand just about one word in five.
