Sheriff gunned down

Greenwood County, Kansas, sheriff shot and killed

EUREKA, Kan. — A southeast Kansas sheriff was shot and killed Wednesday morning, officials said, and the Kansas Highway Patrol was attempting to negotiate with a barricaded suspect.

Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels was pronounced dead on arrival at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, said hospital spokesman Bruce Birchell. He confirmed that Samuels died of a gunshot wound, but he could not provide any more details.

Kyle Smith, a spokesman for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, said in a statement that Samuels and two deputies went to a house north of Virgil, in northeast Greenwood County, at about 10 a.m. to serve felony warrants on someone at the home.

It was not immediately clear whether Samuels was shot by the person named in the warrants, Smith and Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. John Eichkorn said.

Eichkorn also said it was not clear what weapons were in the house.

“We need to get into the house to confirm some of the things that we're thinking,” Eichkorn said. “We're trying to make contact with him to start the negotiating process, but the last I heard that hadn't happened. We're looking at all angles, but we're hoping that we're going to be able to make contact with him in that house and make a peaceful resolution.”

Three other people were arrested without incident, Smith said. Authorities don't believe anyone but the shooter was in the house.

The Greenwood County sheriff's office said it could not provide any information and referred calls to the patrol and the KBI.

Virgil is about 70 miles northeast of Wichita.

A sad day for folks of both families. The little SOB was a meth user, guess he'd gotten worse. The Sheriff was a cousin of the kids mother. They charged the others with manufacturing it. Ruins alot of lives.

Thats Bull who know what....one of the most dangerous things LE can do is serve warrants....and it is usually these rural situations...when a sheriff goes out to serve,.....protocol needs to be changed and it has needed to be changed for a while....I am so sorry for his family......
