Burglary suspect killed by Scott police


SCOTT — A Michigan man, a suspected burglar, was shot by Scott police Saturday morning and died a short time later. Police Chief Chad Leger said he thinks the man was trying to rob a business and tripped a burglar alarm, but two Scott police officers got there so fast the man was trapped.

“At 11:31 a.m., officers were dispatched to West Willow (2700 block) in Scott because a burglar alarm went off,” Leger said. “They checked the building and found one of the side doors was open.”

The officers checked the building, a large metal building that houses Crossroads Investments, and found one of the side doors was open.

Inside the building, they found a camper truck with a man sitting in the driver’s seat.

“When officers first confronted him, at first he said he owned the building,” Leger said. “They he said he was a worker there, but he didn’t have the code.”

The officers were quick to notice that the man’s truck had Michigan plates, Leger said, but he was very cooperative when asked for his driver’s license, which was also from Michigan and in the name of Michael Stewart, 38.

“Then he back to his truck and sat on the driver’s seat, and pulled out a .357 magnum pistol that was on the seat and held it up in the air,” Leger said.

The officers took cover, then ran outside the building, one going left, the other right. Stewart followed, waving the gun in the air, and taunting the officers, as he walked between them, Leger said.

“They gave him numerous commands to drop the weapon and get on the ground,” Leger said. “But he kept pointing it in the air, and then he pointed it at an officer, upon which both officers fired their weapons and struck him.”

Leger said burglar tools were found at the scene and were used to get in the gate and the side door. He said he didn’t want to reveal all the details of the evidence, because the case is under investigation, but that he suspected the man was caught in the act of trying to rob the business and got in his truck to leave when he hear the audible alarm, but didn’t have time to get away.

He said Stewart had driven his truck and camper through the back of the building and had pulled the roll-up doors shut.

“But as soon as he went through the side door of the building, the alarm was activated,” Leger said. “And the got there five minutes later.”

Leger said Stewart was taken to a local hospital and died a short time later.

Yea, he was very cooperative up to the point he aimed his pistol at a cop. Very misleading title, trying to troll up anti cop or pro cop sentiment? I cant tell which...
