yea it is best to not plan trips outside during the summer. summers are too nice at home to go to the heat of america.

Funny you mention that topic! I myself have seen more action in a mortuary than on the forums lately. Ummmmmm, must be the change in weather perhaps. I sure hope things warm up some.

I have been off for awhile and stopped to check in and see if I am missing anything, seems not.

Went out to Jim Creek to take my little boy for a ride on the quad and was suprised at all the people out looking for black bears. I used to hunt(bait) this area about 10 years ago and I noticed the bears did not like to come out until mid may. I kinda laughed at the people telling me that the bears were out all ready.

The weather has been nice and the snow is melting but right now there is not alot of food for them and the bears know when winter is over and judging by the cold and little snow we got I would think it will still be a good couple of weeks till they start to mosey around.

I am looking towards Cooper Landing the middle of may, this seems to be a good time to get them down that way and the selection tends to run on the larger size over the valley bears, unless you hunt up around Trapper Creek.

Looking forward to some confirmed bear sign's on here, let us know what is moving around your hunting areas.

AlaskaBoy.

I KNOW OF GUYS THAT REGULARLY HAVE TAKEN BROWN BEARS IN MARCH BUT TYPICALLY BEARS ARE COMING OUT WELL AND STAYING OUT IN MID APRIL. IT IS A SUNLIGHT THING AS I UNDERSTAND IT. EVEN ON THE NORTH SLOPE THE BEARS ARE OUT STARTING MID APRIL ....ACCORTDING TO FUR AND FEATHERS BIOLOGIST.

summitx,

I usually hunt around/above Snug Harbor road, that is the one just after you cross over the Kenai lake/river bridge, it is on the left hand side. There is alot of houses back there, but there is park road that access's this area. There is a guy who lives right across it that likes to try and give you "That you are on Private Property" b.s. He is a big guy who drives and older Ford(early 80's), the last time I was down that way I was helping a friend track a bear he had shot. He threatend to kick my @#@, but I just loaded up my 44 and put it in its holster and then I turned around and told him to start the party.

He backed down when i told him he was harrasing hunters and that was illegal and that I was going to call the troopers if he did not back off. The Trooper's did show up(he called them) and they did confirm me on that it was not private land and that we were free ti hunt up there, but my friend was ticketed for baiting to close to houses. He was a couple hundred feet shy of being the required mile. He moved it after that of course.

There is a power line that runs thru there and the bears will cross it in the evening headed down towards the lake and there is a logging road that they walk on too. Lots of open hillsides to glass or if you want you can just still hunt thru there. I have heard Cooper lake is just the same, I have just never been there.

Hope this helps some.

Nimrod,

I do not doubt you and have seen it done before that ealry. I was just laughing at so many people looking with the intent of actually getting one. Running up and down that valley might get you one but I think that if you got off the wheeler and sat up high then they might see one. There is so many people riding out there these days that the bears are going to keep way off the trail system in daylight hours, in fear of getting run over, rather then shot.

AlaskaBoy.

ALASKABOY I AGREE IT IS UNLIKELY TO GET ONE. THE GUY I KNOW THAT GOES OUT EARLY IS FLYING AND SEE THE DEN HOLE WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN COMING OUT OFFAND ON OR A WINTER KILL THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING OVER AND THEN GOES AFTER THEM THE NEXT DAY I PREFER LATE MAY OR EARLY MAY TO USE THAT TIME WHEN THEY ARE OUT IN EARNEST AND SOME BEAR HUNTERS HAVE SWITCHED TO BEING FISHERMAN. WHEN I'VE TRIED ON THE SLOPE IN MID APRIL I HAVE NOT SEEN A TRACK CRAP THE SNOW WILL BE COVERING THE GROUND FOR 1- 2 MORE MONTHS UP HERE FROM THEN. BUT GROUND SQUIRRELS ARE OUT SO THEY CAN DINE ON THEM AND WINTER KILLS.

Hello all,

Anyone find a bear yet? Spring is here this time, I am almost sure of it this time.

But if the weather where my dad lives(Michigan) is a indication, then it might not be spring yet.

Alaskaboy

You sure are right about it not being spring Here in Michigan.

3 inches of snow on the ground this morning in Howard City. Tracking snow for turkey hunting. This is just why I don't apply for the early hunts.
