Weatherby Rifle

Not really knowing all that much about rifles and such I need to know....What do ya all think about Weatherby rifles? It is a late 80's made gun in 300 Weatherby Mag...has a Weatherby scope and 45 rounds of factory loaded ammo for it. Guy wants 700 for it but think I can get it for 600. Looks really good. Just not certain I want it and don't know anything about Weatherby scopes. Oh BTW it is a Mark V but is of course the Japanese made variety. I have a German Weatherby that I bought years ago and don't shoot.... but it is worth quite a bit and I just want a shooter for hunting in Wyoming and Montana. What do y'all think? Is it worth 600 bucks? Been shot 15 times since new.

skeet,
I've ben very pleased with Weatherby's rifles. I have a couple now but they are the more modern Mark V Accumarks. The older wood stocked versions were a real peach to look at and I think they were known to shoot very well but of course they were expensive. The only thing I balk at are their proprietary cartridges like you're looking at now. The odd ball calibers like the 338 Weatherby sell for over $90 bucks a box! I think that .300 Weatherby Mag might be available in factory loads other than Weatherby's loads.

I know nothing about the glass.

I would think that gun was worth $600 even without the glass.

On a side note that doesn't mean a darned thing, Weatherby's current plant is nearly in my backyard here on the central coast of California. Also, my Dad bought a go-kart from Roy Weatherby for my brothers back in the '60's. It was in the front window of his old shop in South Gate, CA! I've been meaning to go in and ask the sons who now run the corporation if they remember that old cart as it was theirs as young kids!

Seems like a good price. I wouldn't worry bout the Japanese building it - I have owned Toyotas and Hondas pushing 200k and I gotta think thats a bit harder to build than a rifle.

300 WBy caliber is the one WBY I would think about owning - yes 300 wby ammo is avail almost anywhere that has a decent selection - you may not find it in a gas station in the middle of no-where but it is fairly common. Good caliber and brass (if hard to come by for some reason) can be made by simply firing 300 H&H in your rifle - fireformed just like that.

Disclaimer: Easch rifle is different and any decision you make to shoot what ever ammo is YOURS and not mine - I can not and will not be held responsible for any mistakes or accidents.

Thanks TD and Teal.. I may just buy the rifle but I'll probably swap out the scope as I have a VariX II 3X9 I could put on it.. If I buy it I'll post a picture of it. Hey TD didn't I see ya buying something on The Fuge??

Now I gotta sell the Remington 700 7MM mag I have. Never cared much for the 7MM Mag for some reason... DUH... Whadda I know about rifles anyway?? Welll. I do know the little thing comes out the end real fast so ya want to point it away from ya!!

Yeah skeet, I'm always buying something on the 'fuge! I have these two Citori Lightnings (12 & 20) and I am buying up Briley X2 extended chokes like they're going out of style! I just bought like 6 or 7 on ebaY the other day and was looking for a fill in for one that wasn't at auction and one of the 'fuge Gang had a new one he was willing to part with. I stumbled on a great deal on ebaY, I ended up paying $33 bucks for one (NIB) including Priority shipping but then took four 20ga chokes for no more than $22 each, new in the package! I've been shopping around the 'net and only found MidwayUSA to have the best price at $35 each plus shipping.

I'm "almost" done with my collection!

skeet

Buy it!!!!!!!
I have three Weatherbys in 270 mag, 7 mag, and 300 mag. The 270 mag was made in Japan and is my favorite. The 7 mag was made Germany and the 300 Weatherby mag was made in the US in 1958. All are Mark V's.
You'll steal it at $600.
That's all I can say

Weatherby

Picture isn't very good but the rifle is really pretty. Don't like the scope too much but the mounts are Beuhler and built like a bank vault. Bore is spotless and rifle has been shot less that 50 times. Few scratches etc but probably look worse than this after I get done hunting with the darn thing.
