It's pretty hard to tell.
If a zippy 243 is 1 1/2" high at 100, it is probably somewhere near "on" at 200, and very close to "on" at about 35 yards. If it is an inch low at 50, I don't know how to answer your question. The only way I know to tell is to set up targets at 50, 100, 200, and 300, and see what it does. |

Well I went hunting and saw a big boaR RIGHT at dark but he was too far away for me to see him in my cross hairs and in thick brush. Before next weekend i'll shoot it and see. it would have been in the ball park if i would have got a shot.

If you are hunting Hogs, You need a bigger gun! JMHO.

As already pointed out, it's hard to tell, but if the bullet is an inch low at 50 it will be lower at 100.
Do a search on "point blank range" and add "sighting a rifle" to it. You will get a concept that you should apply to your decisions about sighting your rifle. |

I have lost count of the hogs i've killed with that litle gun. With the low recoil you can make a shot that is accurate enough to for 1 shot kills every time. When i shoot that gun something is going down be it a pig deer coyote etc...

Hi 243hunter,
Hmmm sounds like you need a decent scope The reticles on the majority of US scopes are too fine for hunting in imbr at near dark and just before sun up. As the Europeans hunt this way most of the time their scopes usually have heavy reticles so hey are visible in these conditions. The only thing is that the heavy reticle makes shootign small groups on the range or whilst sighting in more difficult as it obscures more of the target, The centre cross of the reticle in my pecar covers 1" of the target no matter which power the scope is set on. The 4 US made scopes I have are all used for daylight hunting, maybe the first hunting period of te day depending on where I am hunting and what is the quarry, otherwise it's back to the Eurpoean scopes so I can see the reticle as the lights really fades.

I dont have my old ballistic software handy, but after i worked it up originally (1993 or so) i sightin at 100 yards at 2 1/4 inches high on the iron sights, but different bullet coeff's could change that.
there are several decent ballistic programs out there for free or cheap. they can get you close enough to cutdown on a large part of your sightin. borescope it, run ballistics, then finetune at the range. |

Brithunter is right on with the better scope idea (Naturally, he is British after all!).
If you have the money, Leupold has the option of a German #1 post , on a scale of one to a zillion, this gets top marks for seeing in dim light, even on low power settings like 3X. The VX-I & II's and the older Vari1 & 2's can have this installed. On a budget, the Elite 3200 with their 3-2-1 reticle is very good also. I use both (in Germany!) and would be perfect on your .243 Jon
