Killer Woodpecker

Last evening was a first for me. Sitting in my high seat, here comes this woodpecker barreling right for me, flew right by me about a foot in front of my nose. Strange thing was, it had caught and was holding a small bird in it's beak, not a baby bird, looked like a wren or sparrow. It landed in a tree about 20 yards from me, no doubt about it looking thru my binoculars, it had a meal and was eating it.

Didn't know woodpeckers were predators. Guess it figures though, they eat grubs and such from the trees. It wasn't a little Downy either, about the size of a BueJay, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

I know it`s mushroom time but I think you should wait till you`re back home and stick with some real morels instead of huntin` anymore of them fancy euro peeing types.
Ya might just fall out of that tree next time..........`room huntin` from a tree stand, never heard the like........

Okay, it must have been a tough day in court for me because I had to read Ol'Joe's post three times before I could understand what he was trying to say. After figuring it out, I am sitting here beating myself on the head about why I had to read it three times.

Dom,

What are you hunting at this time of the year out of a tree stand? Since you are in Germany, I would guess that the season is the same over there as it is here (i.e., Spring).

Ol Joe -- you must be getting old -- you just gotta have good eyes and binoculars to find them 'rooms from high up!! You're making my mouth water, nothing like morels fried in butter, I can almost smell them.

Anyway Fabs, I'm deer hunting, season opened 1 May for bucks and runs to 15 October -- then it's doe until 15 January. Can't beat over 9 months deer season . . . Yes, it's Springtime -- Roe deer are a funny critter, rut is mid July. Other than that weird deer, all other animals and bird habits are same as in North America.

I will say tho that safety is a major reason why a lot of hunting is out of high seats, so the high caliber bullets go in the ground and not flying off into the distance.
