Hey folks,
Was curious as to you Illinois folks as to just how early in the year you have seen whitetail deer bucks begin to grow their velvet antlers? |

I don't know how it is down there, but here I saw 2 bucks the other night while out for a drive. Both were well on thier way with new growth.

The reason that I brought it up Tox is because I too saw some deer while camping with family over the Memorial Day weekend and I thought that I could just make out new growth on some bucks feeding off the roadside at dusk.
I thought that this may be a little early though. |

If I remember correctly, the new growth starts shortly after they drop thier antlers... I just takes a few weeks for it to show.
The two I saw were fairly young bucks (based on the body size) but might have some decent racks. There is a ton of moisture around here this year, and the crops should be good.. might be another year for big racks!

Yea, they start regrowing them soon after they drop their old rack. I say a buck the other nite that had a rack that would look real good in season. He didn`t look to be any extreemly large body deer, but he had 1 heck of a rack, especially for this early.
