I recently bought a .44 Super Redhawk and plan to go hog hunting. Not a handloader so I need factory ammo. What ammo have others used in this gun for hogs and is that ammo the most accurate. I put a Simmons 2 x 6 scope on it and have shot about 250 rounds of magtech 240 gr. softpoint bullets to practice. I was going to try Winchester Supreme partition gold 250 gr. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
Can anyone recommend a good hog hunt on the east coast. I want to stalk or maybe post and want a larger type hog. |

I don't know about hog huntin, but I just searched far and wide for a .44 mag bullet for bears. The guides, and gun shelf experts all recommend a soft point or cast core, (most recommend the soft point over the cast core but cast core over hollow point.) I found a sweet round the shoots great, Speer Gold Dot 270 grain Soft Point. The soft points perform better than hollow points when penatration is needed. This should apply for hog huntin too. I also looked at and liked the Sellier and Bellot 240 grain soft point and the Federal 300 grain cast core. Good luck.

Randy Garret at www.garrettcartridges.com has great ammo for hogs. I have not personally shot any but a gunsmith friend of mine test fires all of his 44 mags with Garrett ammo.

First, welcome to HuntChat. I think you'll like it here. Lots of great knowledge and experience combined with friendly atmosphere.
Now to your question: the rounds you've been shooting should do fine, as will the Partition Gold 250. The choices mentioned by the other posters are at least as good. You won't go wrong with any of them. Avoid any hollowpoints and anything lighter than 240 grains, and you should be fine on most hog hunts. Hard-cast SWC or jacketed will work fine, although the hard-cast may be best of all for maximum penetration on such a tough animal. You don't list a location, but I can heartily recommend the hog hunting opportunities in any of the Southeast states. I lived in Florida for almost a decade, and feral hogs were considered a pest animal even then. Anywhere from there up through North Carolina will have excellent hunting, guided or not. For better info, scroll down to our Bears and Boars forum and ask there.

Was out at the range today and tried Winchester and Hornady. The Hornady 240 gr XTP (1350 fps) rounds were the most accurate. I was able to group 6 shots at 50 yards into a 1.5 inch by 3.5 inch rectangle with some shots overlapping others. I saw a post elsewhere about this round and the person dropped a boar at 50yrds with it. Thanks for all the replies. I will check out the bear and boar link and see what others say.

the best .44 mag factory load for hogs, at least for me, is the Speer 270 grain GDSP. This has proven consistant, accurate, and deadly on both deer and hogs.
I handload with the same bullet, and a lot of H110.

all good info, i prefer a rifle/shotgun myself for hogs, but thats just me.
a friend of mine who does handgun hogs, uses either the speer gold dot's, or his own handloaded soft points. I'll try to get ahold of him soon and see what his handload is. |
