Savage - how does it group?
I'm thinking seriously about a Savage chambered in 270. Can anyone tell me what kind of groups I can expect at 100 yards? Thanks. (1st time user).

They are well built guns for a good price they will group as good as any factory gun with factory loads.
with hand loads and a little triger work 1" groups should be no problim maybe just hand loads. |

Don't get a 270 and you won't have to worry about accuracy...go up to the 30-06(cheaper plinking ammo...more accuracy...more power...greater bullet weight range...etc...) 1/2" @ 100 yards(with a 30-06 that is) This may anger the 270 owners, but the truth must be accepted.

Savage - how does it group?
Hey thanks wrenchman. How do you think it'll group with factory ammo? I'm new to rifles, so I don't really know what good is. Anybody else shooting this gun?

REM 700: I have heard that the 270 caliber is not always as developed or accurate as many others. I also heard that the new Federal Fusion load was just sensational. Have you tried it?

I have a savage 243 i have not shot to many factory loads threw it.
I do have a 270 in a 700 i like winchester suprems 130 grain most 270s have a twist rate for it. The best thing to do is try some different rounds find what your gun likes. |

Rediculous. Just because you don't care for one particular cartridge doesn't mean out should be making outlandish remarks about it.
I dislike the .25/06 when compared to the .270win for deer hunting. Doesn't mean I'll say the '06 can't group worth beans or won't take down the biggest of bucks. It's B.S. When you state stupid and ignorant false info in here, it voids any e-credit anyone would have ever given you. With the proper handloads and the right rifle, you can get the .270 to group as well as or maybe even BETTER than the '06. it's FACT! Last edited by model 70; 09-03-2005 at 07:42 PM. |

Years back, I had a 110....06. With proper load, it would MOA or better all day! Gave it to my kid for a first gun. Took antelope/deer and elk with it. Aside from trigger pull, I'd rate it as highly reliable. This was ne of the older ones, not a package deal.

Have you seen EVERY group from every rifles(custom or stock) shooting every handload or facotry loading??? Didn't think so. Betcha there are a few out there that show one ragged hole just as there are groupings from an '06 that look strinkingly similar.
While I do own and shoot a .270 almost exlusively I do enjoy other cartridges. My only beef comes with false information handed out to people who are looking for solid info. Leave your biases away from actual knowledge. |

270 vs 06
Well M-70..it is apparent you do like the 270 and I have to say you are dead on with this one. The 06 is a pretty accurate cartridge as has been proven over the last 99 years. But it surely isn't any more accurate in the average rifle than any other cartridge. We all have a favorite rifle or cartridge and I do have to say the 06 really isn't the one to try to learn with. The 270 is a little easier to shoot than the 06 for the most part.....the smaller 06...25-06 that is... is even easier for a newbie to learn to shoot well. That's what I really learned with....even though I prefer the 270 over the 25 I have lots of different caliber center fire rifles. So that is why I don't usually recommend any one cartridge over another. You have to find what works best for you. I think if I were going to buy one rifle(as a new rifleman) for all around use it would be either the 270 or the 280. Hard to beat either one in my opinion...especially for a starter rifle...Buy the 30 cals after you learn to cope with the lighter recoiling numbers

Exactly! Most of us aren't strictly bench rest shooters. We're hunters and we use hunting rifles. Hell, this thread started off about a particularl hunting rifle. My only complaint was with the original stupid remarks about one cartridge in particular. It just happened to be the one I am partial to.

I have both of you beat i have both and i yous both guns
i have killed deer bear and hogs with my 06 i like to youse the 270 for deer and antilope i like the 270 it shoots flater then a 06 for deer. I have never seen one gun any more accurate then the other or one better then the other they both have inhearent yous that will edge the other out but they will both do the job. The 06 will do anything a larg bore gun will do and a 270 shoots as flat as any magnum. Till the ultra mags came out the 270 had the farthes point blank rang. I like to match my gun to my needs heavy cover i like the 06 where shots are over a 100 yards i like the 270. The last few years i have had to hunt with a shot gun in a shot gun only area i miss hunting with my rifel. |

We all know the 270 is an excellent deer(and occasionally elk) cartridge, and if the shooter is capable, it will take deer beyond 500 yards. However, even in the almighty Remington model 700, a 30-06 has always grouped better than a 270(even with its bore size). When you say "try every handload or factory loading: every group from every rifle" that is what puts the 270 down. The 30-06 has a better selection of factory ammunition, and performs excellently with anything you feed into it. 270 is more sensitive, and once again, just less accurate. It's quite unimpressive to hear "every group from every rifle." Makes it sound like you need a high price custom gun to make it perform as well as the 30-06. The 270 is a strictly hunters rifle. I like to shoot prairie dogs and such at long ranges for fun, so I personally like more reliability in a cartridge for its accuracy, not an unneeded niche between 25- and 30-06.
