Any expieriance with the Whispers?

I am thinking of buying a T/C Encore and getting a Whisper caliber. Dose anybody out there have any expieriance in shooting any of the Whisper lines. I was thinking of a .300 whisper or .338 whisper. Also what kind of accuracy can i expect from the hand gun. How is the recoil? I have shot plenty of .44 mag ( who hasnt?) so i am used to that ammount of recoil.

Welcome to HuntChat!

Because I am a T/C illiterate, this sounds like a good question for our fearless leader Rocky Raab or maybe Skinny. I know these guys do T/C.

Whisper

The 300 Whisper is a nice cartridge in the Contender. Have a loaded round right here on my computer desk.(lots of junk on here). One load I shoot only loses about 50-75 FPS in the first 200 yds...total. It'll bust a deer for sure and it is accurate. As TD said...Rocky will know more than me or most anyone on these pages BTW...Welcome aboard!!

Thanks for the welcome guys! I have never owned a T/C before, while i have fired off a few rounds in barrowed pistols. I just think that the whispers are the coolest things out there! My opinion only! If there are any books or web. sights around on the subject i would love to know those to!

Thanks again!

Well, lessee here...

(But first, I think the compliments were a bit overdone. I ain't that sharp.)

The Whisper line is the product of J.D. Jones' fertile mind. The original idea was to produce a nearly silent round for use in suppressed M-16 rifles by snipers.

So the thing had to fit in a standard M-16 magazine and cycle the action - besides the difficult ballistic chore.

Jones took the .221 Fireball case ( for its capacity, length and head diameter) and necked it up to .30 caliber. He reasoned that a very heavy and long .30-cal bullet would be extremely efficient in flight, even if launched sub-sonically.

So the original Whisper used the 240-gr Sierra MatchKing in the Fireball case. Overall length fit the M-16 magazine, and the case head size fit the M-16 bolt.

Brilliant.

Launched at 1100 fps, that sleek Matchking arched a bit, but held velocity like a miser clutching silver dollars.

There may be "black" teams out there using it as we speak.

As far as a hunting round goes (my opinion follows) there are better choices. The Whisper is an accurate little cuss, but there are better and easier ways to use .30-cal bullets from a single-shot handgun. The Contender/Encore guns handle rimmed rounds much better than rimless ones, too.

I'd enjoy playing with a Whisper, but if I were headed out to hunt deer, I'd change to my 7-30 Waters or my .30 Herrett barrel.

300 Whisper etc

Rocky is of course right about better cartridges for deer etc. The 180 gr 30 cal bullet is a much better choice in the whisper for deer.. A little louder too. Barks just a bit. I've never been able to get the 30 Herrett to shoot very well out of my gun. But the 35 Remington shoots really good out of my Contender(14 inch). Actually better than I can hold a handgun. Never used a 7-30 Waters out of my contender but I'll bet it is a Jim Dandy
BTW...I have a 45-70 bbl for my Contender and it shoots really well...but about 5 shots and I've had enough...ok.ok...I'm a wimp..but that darn thing KICKS.. Can y'all spell the word FLINCH!!

I guess i never did say . I am a target freak, i love the challenge of it all. While i do know that there are many other choises out ther for deer( the largest animal i would consider takeing with a .300 whisper), I know it will get it done. If i where going out in the woods for big game i would consider the .375 jdj! But for now i want to play with the whispers!
Also can we get the contender in the .500 whisper? Thats down the road but already on the list!!!!!!!!

Happy shooting!

The .300 wisper is most interesting when it is subsonic, loaded hot, it`s very close to the ole 30-30. I think the .500 whisper is the .378 WBY mag case, maybe a bit much for a T/C...........

Cool Re: 300 Whisper etc

The 180 gr 30 cal bullet is a much better choice in the whisper for deer....
Gotta disagree here. My first T/C was a .30 Herrett in 1975, when the only good deer bullets were rounded or flat and weighed 110 grains. A 180-grain bullet will not expand at .300 velocities on deer. JD recommends the 125 Nosler BTip for the .300 Whisper on deer, and my experience supports JD's idea. I've used that bullet in three 10" T/C barrels on deer, the .30 Carbine, the .300 Whisper and the .30 Herett. The latter is the best deer cartridge IME. The .30 Carbine needs excessive pressures to get the bullet to expand past 25 yards. The Whisper works very well, but is more range-limited than the Herrett. The Herrett is the 'king .30' of 10" tubes ( although the .30-30 isn't far away).

My Whisper shoots very well, but no better than one of my Herrett barrels (the other Herrett shoots 2+ moa no matter what). It is far eaiser to make .300 cases than to make Herrett cases. But for simple fun, the .30 Carbine wins - cheap brass, carbide dies, even lower report and recoil, and it's usable on targets and small game. I shot IHMSA silhouettes with mine for years and had great results out to 220 yards with 165-grain cast bullets and RL7 powder(!).

A 30 Herrett was my second barrel for my first Contender. I've taken deer with it out to 350 yards, although that definitely stretched the barrel to it limits.

I've also owned or used barrels in a rimmed 300 Savage and plain ol' thutty-thutty. So I have experience with a range of case capacities in .30-cal Contenders.

In 10" barrels, the Herrett is tops (heck, that's what it was created for) but in a 14" I think the 30-30 is probably the optimum case capacity. Smaller caes are extremely efficient, but they also have to operate at MUCH higher pressures to achieve equal velocities. Larger cases like the 300 Savage leave too little chamber wall thickness and have excessive backthrust at their normal pressures. That can wreck a Contender in short order.

If you aren't a pretty experienced handloader, the Herrett isn't a good option due to the difficulty in CORRECTLY making cases. So for the average Joe, I'd have to vote for the good old 30-30.

Bullet choice? That 125 Ballistic Tip is THE 30-cal pistol bullet for deer. (It is NOT a deer bullet at rifle speeds - don't even think about it!). Other good choices are the Rem 125 SP, the Hornady or Sierra Single Shot Pistol bullets, or bullets meant for the SKS.

Cast bullets from 150 to 180 grains would also be fine if not too hard to expand. Any design made for the 30-30 with a BHN of 15 or so would be great.
