Decoy layout
I hunt ducks in Idaho along the Snake River, It seems the ducks are more attracted to other hunters spreads then mine. I have 2 dozen decoys and more or less just lay them out in no special order. Is there a tried and tested way to lay a spread or is it more important to just be in a good location?

Location, location, location!!!
...but your spread is important too. You need to make sure that you leave a reasonably large open area for the ducks to land. They don't like flying over other ducks to do so either. There are old proven setups like the "J" Pattern or the "C" Pattern where the back of the "C" or bottom hook of the "J" would be into the wind. Like airplanes, ducks always prefer to land INTO the wind so whenever possible, set up with your back to the wind and your dekes out in front oriented to allow for an upwind landing that should be right out in front of you, say at 20-25 yards. As for river current, I have never hunted a river so I don't know if that's an issue. Maybe someone else can respond to that subject. Btw....you MUST know our resident "Tater?"

The only problem with setting up like that is that, around here, the wind changes direction so much it doesn't really do much good. When we go out we just spread them out so there's enough room for dinner to land and the dekes can move with the wind without clanking together.
By the way, where on the Snake do you go? We usually go out near Bruneau Dunes State Park.

If the wind is changeing alot, maybe setting up into little family groups, leaving a big area in the center for a landing zone. I like having a single hen infront of the blind also. Old timers always told me to do so caus the ducks will see a hen closer to where the calling is coming from.

Another question would be how many dekes do you have to set up?
The family groups would be more what I'd go for. I would look to observe real ducks on the river and see how they behave and what habitat they are drawn to. Be the habitat

Thanks for the help, I will try to arrive at the hunting area earlier to get the best location but have some competition because others already arrive 2 hours before shooting time starts. I'll try both the C and J layouts and when my hunting partner Tater joins me with his decoys maybe we'll try the small groups set-up.
Tater I haven't posted in years this is just my new user name. You want to go out this weekend if the water isn't froze solid? |
