NEF Handi Rifels???

I bought 3 of the breech load H & R rifles about 10 years ago in 22 Hornet. I bought 3 because they were cheaper that way and 2 of my buddies wanted one as well. The UNLUCKY guy that I am a lot of the time left me with the only one that shot 3" groups at 100 yards The other 2 shot just over an inch with home loads.. With that said I am looking into getting my 6 year old a 223 Handi Rifle by New England Firearms but I am scared that they will not shoot very well.

My first question is ,,,How many of ya'll have them or have some direct experience with them and how did they shoot.

Next question.. What is the rate of twist. I would like to shoot 55 grainers out of it at the heaviest.

Last question... I found them at Sportsmans Warehouse in San Antonio and they were $219. My buddies dad doesn't have his FFL anymore and I can't get the "Brother In Law" deal any longer and I was wodering if there was anywhere cheaper to get one.. Thanks in advance

He currenlty shoots a 22 Hornet but that doesn't give much room for error when hitting deer behind the shoulder. I want a little more knock down power to take care of any "Not so perfect" shots..

If it shoots that badly something may be wrong with it.
Several of my friends and cousins have them and all shoot 1 moa at the least.

might check into having the factory look it over, and whiel it's there, have it fitted for a different caliber barrel.
Kind of a pain that the factory has to do the matchup work, but cool to have one rifle with multiple barrels.

I have a .243, and it shoots OK, not exactly a tack driver.

I own a 17HMR in NEF and I find it extremely accurate and consistant 1/2" MOA. at 100yds.

My .223 shoots great, even in windy N.Y.S. My only gripe is that the rifle twist only supports up too 55gr bullets.

I've an NEF with a 22 Hornet and a .45-70 bbl both shoot well but my main complaint was the shotgun thigger. I took it to my gunsmith and he did a trigger job on it. It cut my groups to under 3/4" on the .22 Hornet and under 1 1/2 in on the 45-70 !!!!.
BTW, All things considered, NEF'S charge for a bbl and fit is quite reasonable.

I keep meaning to send my rifle back to the factory, to have the trigger worked on.

DO NOT send your rifle back to the factory for a trigger job. Factory guns have heavy triggers because of liablity, take it to a gun smith. I had my .17 Rem. rebarreled on a factory recall and whan I got it back they had screwed up a real good trigger and sealled the screws. Soooo, I had to redo the trigger on it.

Oh, I’ve heard that the factory will reduce the weight if you send the gun in with a written letter asking for it. From what I was told they will reduce it to no less than 3lbs. Its probably was BS anyhow .

Oh well, Id rather not wait, for a trigger job anyhow.
Just my luck it would be screwed up. It would be better to see the person Im yelling at, for doing bad work. I miss my smith back home. He knew what he was doing.

i bought a .223 for my boys this past christmas and plan on sending it back for an additional barrel next month (7mm08). the .223 i have is shooting so so, actualy it is sort of shifting points of impact (p.o.i.) on the groups so i'm going to replace the scope on it and try again. i have heard and have confirmed that the factory will indeed clean the trigger up a tad if requested. si when it goes back for the extra barrel i'll have the trigger tweeked too. i went with the .223 barrel first because i have two young boys that need to work on their long range shooting this year and the .223 is cheap to buy. bith barrels will have their own scope so next fall when we gear up for their first whitetail hunt we'll just swapp the barrels and be good to go. i'll have them shoot the 7mm08 this summer once they are proficent with the .223 at 100 yds. we will set limits to their acctual shot on a deer this fall after we see what they can consistantly do.

After ya get it back take it to yer gsmithy and have thr tpull reduced to 3-4#, should cost 'bout $40.00.
