problem loading m1 carbine

I got a set of used steel lyman dies, the resizing/deprime die (lyman 30 m1 fl), new winchester brass a lee trimmer as well as a rcbs trimmer witha 30 caliber pilot. After resizing the new win brass the pilot of either trimmer will not fit in the brass case. What am I missing? I'm thinking of expanding them a little in order to trim them.

Any idea whats wrong.

oh almost forgot the pilots will go in the brass before going through the die.

What you are running into is normal.
Do your case trimming before you size the brass.

I have the lyman 47th reloading manual and they say to resize/deprime before measureaing and trimming brass. If this is normal is it something with this caliber or die set I never had to trim anything else first. Trimming first would make the lee trimmers useless since the primer has to be removed.

The problem you described in your first post is not unique to the 30 Carbine caliber. You will run into the same problem with many calibers.

This is a common situation on certain calibers and I deprime these type cases with a Lee depriming tool before resizing the case. You can use the full length die, just lower the decapping rod far enough to deprime the case without resizing it. After trimming, the cases can be resized in the normal manner. All the best...

The problem is because it's a straight-wall case.

If it were a bottleneck, the expander ball would be bringing the neck diameter back up a bit - just enough to fit the pilot of the trimmer.

But a straight case has no expander ball in the sizer, so the case is being sized down too much for the pilot. You need to run the cases through the expander die after sizing. They should then fit the trimmer pilot precisely. If they are still a bit snug, try buffing down the pilot with crocus cloth with the pilot spinning in a drill. Also be sure to use just a whisper of lube on the pilot every ten cases or so while trimming to keep it from galling the inside of the case necks. Just touch the pilot with an oily finger - you don't want any visible amount, just a film.
