Arrow Caught something different

Went Surf Perch Fishing with my neighbor on Saturday. We live about 5 minutes from the beach and thought we'd give it a quick try for our 5 fish limits. We find a promising hole in the surf and first cast my buddy hooks a little Barred Surf Perch and releases it, second cast the same. We're thinking "this is good" but I'm blanked on my first two casts then on my third...thump!....hookset....ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz goes the reel. Whatever this thing is, it OWNS me!!! I'm on with 8# Maxima with a 10# Trilene leader and a little Diawa BG13 spinning reel! I was hoping it was a big 'ol Halibut but after 15 minutes of in and out, I finally get it up in skinny water where my buddy can see it and grab it by the tail and he does.

Yeild: My first Shovelnose Guitarfish weighs in at 22# 3oz!!

WOW!!!

If there's a fish uglier than a Halibut, that's it.

LOL!!! Yep...it's an ugly one alright!

We were fishing at the Oceano Dunes Vehicular State Park (Pismo Beach Dunes) and there was a few thousand Kooks out there on the beach and the dunes on ATV's, Buggies, Trucks, etc. When people saw us out there fightin' this thing they started gathering around and watching. When it hit the beach and I carried it to the truck, they were all freakin' on it! They all thought it was some kind of Sea Monster! LOL!

I had the same reaction with the first Paddlefish I caught in Montana. I thought to myself, "what the hell is this thing?"

I have to ask you TreeDoc...

Did you know what type of fish you had caught or did you have to use some reference materials for species identification after you rushed back home?

I'm chuckling because I have caught fish in the past that when someone had asked me about ("What is that?" Well...I don't know...yet.")

Sounds like a nice fight all the same. I swear that the ugliest fish seem to put up the best fights!
