Finally got a decent group
I have been shooting muzzleloaders since 1970 and enjoy them. Until today, I have never managed to get the kind of groups that I have read about or heard others recount. I bought a mint Lyman Deerstalker .50 flintlock off the used gun rack a few weeks ago. Last week I sighted it in and had to adjust the rear sight to get some left windage. Then it was time to leave the range.
This afternoon I went to the public range (my regular club ranges were closed for an event) and started shooting. I was using a .490" round ball, .010" lubed patch and 85 grains of FFG Goex. At the public range, you have to wait until the line is safe to go downrange and check your target. So I just kept loading and shooting. Then I went downrange and was amazed at the group with all shots nearly touching just below the bull and in the black on an SR-1 target. The guy checking the next target said he watched my hits through his spotting scope and asked if I was an expert. I said no, I just got lucky. All the best... Gil |

Gil,
Glad to hear your got a front stuffer wot will group. Perhaps you need to buy a spotting scope with a 15X or 20X lense so you can keep score from the firing line like I do. Bring that great shooter here for the October ML season. Adam

Lyman rifle
I just the past dated post about the good groups you scored with newly purchased Lyman. I'm experiencing serious trouble with a CVA caplock .50, doesd the 1-60 twist make that much of a difference than the 1-48 twist with patched round balls?

Mornin stacks, I have a T/C 1 in 48, Then bought a 1 in 66 also from T/C, Then I bought a 1 in 70 from Green Mountain, All round ball barrels, I like the GM barrel, it shoots rings round the T/C barrels, And I like T/C, But every barrel is different, There are 1 in 48s that shoot great, (I hear) I am makin my lady a T/C hawken usin the 1 in 66 T/C barrel, It's a good barrel, (just not as good as GM) You said you are havin serious trouble with yours,, What kind of trouble? What are you shootin out of it?? (rb size, how many grains of what kind of powder, What size patch and at what distance??) I just spent 3 years fine tunin my weapon tryin different things, Now when I get my Lady's 50 put together, I can help her fine tune hers a lot faster,, (I hope)
My last 50 yard target,, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../06-target.jpg As you can sea, I still got a lil sight ajustment to do,, But I am workin on it,,, At 50 yards, that 3 inch circle is smaller then a cigarette filter held at arms length,
