Hangfires with my T/C Omega

When I shoot my T/C Omega I get good ignition of the charge for the first 2 shots and after that I get a hangfire. I am using the 209 primer with 2 777 pellets and a 250 grain sabot. It seems that the vent in the breech plug gets clogged because if I remove the breech and clean it I get 2 more crip ignitions. Any thoughts?

Hi Wiz...welcome to Huntchat. Great place to find things out and to pass on your wisdom too. Everybody has a few little things that no one else ever thinks of..so post 'em here. As far as the hangfires. Hate to tell ya but it is from the Triple 7. For some unknown(to me) reason it leaves some hard type of fouling in the chamber area of the bbl. Try putting about 5 gr of 3F down the bbl before the pellets. May help. I'm sure there are some folks on here that are more knowledgeble than me on this problem. I quit using 777 because of this problem. I went to one of the Savage Smokeless rifles. Can shoot anything in it.

Believe it or not I use 777 loose powder in my flintlock and although it doesn't ignite as quick as "true" BP, I haven't had any problems. Fact is, in my opinion it's the cleanest there is. Even better than that American Pioneer Crap that Jim Shocky endorses. 1000 rounds without cleaning my rear.

Did you know that claim was made meaning, not having to take the gun apart and clean it, yet a wet patch was ran down the barrel after each shot?! Heck you can do that with regular black powder. Believe me, that stuff is just as dirty as the rest.

Anyhow, I digress... I never used 777 pelets, but does it have an ignition end just like pyrodex pellets? (little blacker on the bottom side) I guess I'm just wondering if it does and you could be putting the pullets in backwards?? Like I said, just a guess, but if you look at the pellets and one side is a little darker, then more than likely that's the ignition end.

Just something to check. If not, I know you can purchase different breech plugs and it may just be you got a bum one? Or as skeet said, try something different like pyrodex. Yeah, it's dirtier than 777, but it'll go off!

What Petey said! Never gave that a thought. It is imperative that you put the right side of the pellets down. Still, though 777 IS much cleaner than Black or Pyrodex it has a tendency to leave a crusty residue in the area of the "breech" end of the bbl. A kinda ring where the powder(pellets) are before firing. I did have that problem with all the 777 I used in 3 different guns. And Petey , you're right about that other American Pioneer crap. I tried 3 or 4 different types of "powder"...one of 'em was some kinda vitamin stuff. Anyhow..after it sat in the plastic bottle for about 4 months...it turned into a black bottle shaped lump of sticky goo.

You can still add about 5 gr of 3F black down the bbl first...also..just thought of this..take a Flint gun pick and run it into the breech plug primer hole thingie after a couple of shots No problem on the bench..probably not in the field either

try a couple of the recommended items above, if still no good i would first try a different brand of primer, maybe yours dont spark all that well, if that dont work on the range just fire an empty primer before each loading that should blow the pin hole in the breech plug clear. primers are cheap.
i can tell you in 3 years, driving snow or all day drizzle federal primers and pyro pellets always have gone bang for me

777 pellets do not have the little black color on the one end, Pyrodex pellets do. 777 pellets are all uniform in color. So if you really are using 777 pellets, then this does not apply to you. If you're really using the Pyrodex pellets, however, with the extra black powder end, then the advice offered above is well worth noting.

It is claimed that 777 pellets are the cleanest there is, and indeed that seems true, but you still need to run a wet patch through after every few rounds for best results.

I am shooting 777 and using Winchester 209 primers. I liked the idea of the the pick and firing a primer alone. Just seems like you should be able to shoot 5-6 time before having to do that. I am new to Blackpowder but really enjoyed it so far. I got a nice Northern Wisconsin buck with my rifle and now I am trying to fill a doe tag with the Blackpowder.

Forgot to mention it last post but I was amazed at the ease of clean-up with the 777 I don't know about Pyrodex or BP but I had heard horror stories.

Well I made it to 70 shots with APP without cleaning once(no swabs at all). I could have kept on going but I ran out of powder I could probably get to about 5 or 10(maybe) with 777 with no swabbing before my seating depth changes and gets very difficult. I often shoot 30 shots at the range for practice with APP. No swabbing throughout the entire session, and no notice of increasing seating difficulty. Even with the relatively tight fitting 250gr shockwave. Anywho, just my experience. I might just be lucky.

i really dont sweat the cleaning aspect, i know when i go to the range, that to print those 2.5 inch groups at 100 yds i need to swab between every shot, i just deal with it. if i want to bang alot i take a rimfire along. not to mention i like the feeling of how easy a powerbelt slides down a clean barrel i know it is well seated if i swab out the gunk where the powder ignites in the first two inches above the breech plug. pyrodex is not much cleaner than BP. even hunting though if the deer made it out of sight i run a patch or two. it is what it is, i dont try to make it a clean powder burning experience. keep that in mind and you will kill many deer, it is a patience needed process

I notice a difference in seating pressure immediately in my omega with the APP pellets and dead center sabots. Second shot is downright tough to seat, haven't gone past that. I'm going through the last of what I've got and then I'm done with it. Sounds like you've been extremely lucky.
