Which mounting system??

While planning a scope\mount system for a future hunting rig, I have done some research, and I have noticed, especially on some other boards...lots of shooters have recommended a dual-dovetail system over the standard Redfield-type setup. Is the dual-dovetail system that much better? And is it a major pain to get a scope in the rings without binding??

Don't know just how much help this will be, but I use both Weaver type mounts and Leupold mounts on the rifles I shoot. Never had a problem with either.

I know guys who use the Redfield mounts. They have never had a problem with theirs either. My conclusion is, use what you like; tighten all the screws properly and Loctite them. You will likely end up thinking they (whatever you choose) are the best system of all.

Much time and money is spent dealing with differences and "advantages" that are so subtle as to be meaningless to real life hunting.

The old Redfield mounts have the advantage of windage adjustment for those rifles that have mounting hole that are not close enough to alow the internal scope adjustment to zero a scope. There are other advantages that can be proven on paper as to why 1 mounting system is better that another, but in the field they all work the same. I can understand why more than 2 rings might be needed for some guns with very heavy recoil, but neather of my S&W 500`s need more than 2 rings. Scope mounts are like cars, thet will about all get you there, just how much do you want to spend.

I switch scopes, like a woman swaps shoes, so if you are like me, Weaver style all the way. BUT (he said with drama)on my 223 where I knew I would never remove the scope for any reason I had the Redfield/Leupold STD rings and bases

Jon raises a good point...and that is, if all your rifles use the same scope mounting system, it's considerably easier to switch scopes.
You may think, now, that you'll never want to do that, but you might.
So, decide which system you like, and use that on all your rifles.

Not real fond of the Weaver system, and do not switch scopes that often...and am a Redfield style user more than anything else. Just curious if there is a major following of dual dovetail users.

Probably have mounted well over a thousand scopes. I'd say 75% have been Weaver Bases and Burris Z rings, the rest Leupold (Redfield) standard mounting. A few Dual Dovetail may be a half dozen. The customer opts for what they want. Don't remember of any complaints on any of the systems used. If done properly both systems are excellent.
