Anyone wrap your own fishing rods?

I've an old catfishing rod that gets beat up pretty bad. I'm wanting to rewrap the eyelets. Don't have any nylon thread so I'm wondering about using some of my wifes polyester sewing thread.
So whaddya think?

go to any fly shop they should have the correct rod building supplies you need , those water slappers usually repar and make their own rods
