Back from the OBX

Here's a few pictures from vacation this year. We spent a week in Corova Beach, NC in the Outer Banks. This is by 4x4 beach access only. 10 miles from the hard top and 2 miles south of Virginia

A view from one of our decks

A beach view. Typical day was waking up, taking a walk on the beach, laying for a few hrs, eating, going back to the beach, eating some more....then relaxing from our hard day in the evening

Wild Spanish mustangs / horses roamed the area and was something to look for on our evening jeep excursions. We did fish a little from a headboat and found a day to golf, but it was mostly relaxing all day and swiming in the rather warmer-than-normal ocean waters

A view from the headboat charter we took. Fishing wasn't all that great. I caught two fish, better than the rest of our party. It helped break up the day. We saw plenty of lighthouses, Kitty Hawk and the First Flight location, ate good at a seafood buffet and cooked our own crablegs one evening. I'm sure I put on a few extra pounds on this trip....bad thing about sitting around all day. Nothing else to do but eat and relax!

If I were a pirate, they'd named me Red Belly after this trip! Should have gotten a little more sun before the trip...I think this was day two.

Petey,

Looks like a great trip! I've learned the hard way to keep a shirt on during vacations (more than once, LOL). Quick question: do they have much risk of hurricanes in that area?

Yes they do. I believe August starts Hurricane season down there. All the houses are on 10-20' stilts. I don't think I'd like to be there during an evacuation. Heck one day I only had about 60 yards of beach because of the high tide. I think it could get pretty scarry if you were as far North as I was and a hurricane was coming. There's only 1 way out, and it was around 40 miles South (Southern Shores, just North of Kitty Hawk). I think there's a ferry on the Northern end of Curtiuck Sound, but not accessible from where I was.

Hurricanes etc on the Coast

You ought to see a hurricane come ashore down in that area. The beaches are eroding down there something fierce in tha last few years too. Have a friend that has a house a bit south of where Petey was ... 12 yrs ago it was 200 yds from the surf...now it is less than 100 yds. The houses beachward are now gone. Can't get insurance anymore either. But man the fishing is good down in Carolina. Duck hunting can still be good but the goose hunting is all but gone north. But the fishing. ...20 -30 miles out and in the gulf stream. I'm gonna go tuna fishing in Sept when I go back east. Yeah...real fish!

Great pics Petey. You are almost as white as I am. My arms and legs are pretty tan from all my cycling, but my torso is whiter than my t-shirt.

As far as hurricanes are concerned, they do some serious damage down there. We were down there last summer for the 4th of July, and we went to dinner at some upscale restaurant. In talking to the waitress, she said that business was just finally starting to pick back up after a hurricane from a couple years ago. The hurricane had destroyed all the condos/houses across the way, and business had plummeted as a result.

My brother's girlfriend was talking about my brother and I getting together to buy a rental property down there that we could also use once or twice a week out of the year. Thought about it, then thought about the hurricanes and decided against it.

Nice place for a vacation, and I'll probably go back again, but I don't want to be a property owner down there.

When it blows down here its nasty, and that area gets closed down quick fast and in a hurry, my eldest has a home there and they come up every year from TN. for two weeks.

Great place to clear out the cob webs
