Ok here is a dumb question.
What broad heads do you shoot and why? I ind myself wanting to try different broad heads every year. So far this year I have tried Crimson Crocs and NAP hellfires. Both flew fine, no adjusting sight, but the Crocs I have not heard good things about. Heard they are not very sturdy and will break even in targets. Well I should say in the reviews I have read.
I like a fixed blade, don't trust mechs, and I like cut on contact blades. Last year I started out shooting steel force then switched to sonics 7/8". My cousin really likes them and had good luck with them. I found the sonics blood trail was not very good, but I could have hit high, I ended up loosing that one . So what do you guys shoot and why? |

Muzzy 4 blade 115gr.
Why? Because I like 4 blade broadheads, and the 115's dwarf the 100gr 4 blade muzzys. Also, muzzy has relatively inexpensive replacement blades. |

Delduck,
went through a few kinds myself a few years back looking for something better. Ended up settling on Rocket Ultimate steel heads. really good groups, excellent penetration, and they're about half the price of what I was using before (although that wasn't a big consideration). At 40 yards, shot a buck that was quartering away, broadhead went though a rib going in and exited the offside shoulder. The week before, made the same shot on a doe at 30 yards, same result - pass thru shot exiting through the shoulder blade. gd

Ya know, I really adhere to the old sayin "you git what you pay fer".....but is it true so much with broadheads?
Muzzy 90 gr 3 blade fixed is what I use by the way. Just like 357 says...he went lookin fer a better broadhead that's cheaper and works just as good. He found it too. A name is just a name I think. I know it's that way with guns too.

Switched to shooting a recurve this year and of course everything changed including my broadhead choice.
I used to shoot a variety of broadheads, including 3 years of shockwave expandables. I killed quiet a few deer with those, but had a bad experience once so returned to fixed blade. It resulted in a kill, but was not the result I wanted from a broadhead. I always ended up shooting my koplin twister 85 grain 4 blades. You can't buy them anymore, so when Cabelas had 5 packs of repalcement blades, I bought them all, plus all the bodies they had about 5 or 6 years ago. I ended up with around 15 heads and enough replacement blades to last me for a spell. I've shot everything from Muzzy's to Rocky Mountain broadheads. My kolpins have brought home more deer than I can keep track of, so why change? I haven't tried any of the new gimicks out there, but I'm sure I'll be looking for a new brand once I run out. Probably the most impressive I've seen with those Kolpins was a nice 3 point mule deer (3x3 for the Easterners! ) buck I shot completly through both front shoulders at 8 yards. Buck dropped on the spot like you hit him with a rifle. I took that same head and killed a nice whitetail buck in PA a month later and am still using it today! With my new rig, I went with a heavier 3 blade cut on contact. I went from shooting 75#'s to 55#'s and from a release to using fingers and shooting off the shelf. I needed something that would fly good. Those 4 blades just plain sucked. I ended up with 125 grain Magnus Snuffers. Easy to resharpen and they literly fly just like my field points (shooting 5 inch right helical twist sheild cut feathers). The feathers have everything to do with it I'm sure. I can't wait to try them out. They are one solid piece, no replaceable blades so I would imagine they are going to hold up to any beating I put on them. Not too shabby in price either...I think I got 6 for a tad bit more than $25. Hard to buy 3 new fangled gimicks for less than $30 these days

I was shooting thunderheads.. but switched out to SlickTricks this fall.. we will see how they do.
They are flying so far like my field points! so we should be good to go!

broadheads?
any fixed two blade.
my personal preference? magnus 125 screw-ins sharpened via KME broadhead sharpening system are at the top, but, ace, zwickey, STOS are right up there, too. the KME system will sharpen them to the point where shaving or performing surgery with them would be easy. IMO, the two blade variety are generally much sturdier as the blade thickness is normally 0.025" or greater (my 'mic' tells me the laminated tip of the aces i use are 0.060" and the cutting blades are 0.037") it's difficult for animal bone and tissue to stand up to something like that, that's razor sharp. i've shot them through some very tuff critters with devistating results.
