1st fox to the call... Pic's.
I got out of work today around 7am. I checked the weather and it's suppose to warm up in the mid 40's for the next couple of days with high winds and rain. I figured today would be the last good day to call with all the snow we have. We got hammered with around 20" of snow this past week.
I got to the 1st stand around 9ish. Slight breeze, but no high winds like they were calling for today. I wanted to call a couple stands before it was too windy. I worked my way through woods looking for signs. A few years back I use to to bow hunt this property and always seen foxes in the early morning. On the back side of the property is a small spot that's covered in concert slabs. That was my route, working slowly and quietly. Once I got near, tracks of fox were everywhere! Gold Mine! I got onto some higher ground over looking the slabs and making sure there wasn't a bedded fox laying around the concert. I took my gloves off, opened my flip caps on my Leupold. I was using a FoxPro w/no remote. I turned the caller on and within 10 seconds, I seen movement right in front of me. Fox, where the hell he come from? The fox was going to come up on the high ground were I was at, but must of didn't like something. I turned the caller off. The fox stopped and I placed the cross hairs behind his shoulder. My .204 barked, Fox down. About 20 seconds later, the fox disappears in a hole that was right by him. Too late to get another shot. I'm thinking he's gone for good. I worked down from the high spot and down into the concert slab valley. Next to the hole was blood and pee. I looked into the hole and the fox was laying in there. All I could see was his tail and feet. I made sure the fox was dead before I pulled him out. A beautiful female Red Fox. She'll look nice skinned and tanned. Shot the fox about 30yds, came out of her hole. I used 34gr DogTown bullets from MidwayUSA. Went in about a dime and came out about 3"-4". I was planning on packing a .22 Hornet, but my magazine for my CZ was garbage, wasn't feeding reliably. I'm waiting on a new one. I didn't want to have 2 or more predators come in and only have 1 shot since I'm using the CZ like a single shot. 2nd stand that I made I had a coyote come in, but didn't stick around long. I don't know why, wind was in my favor. Was too far through the thick stuff to take a half ass shot. He vanished through the snow blanket forest. If I wasn't in a tree stand, I wouldn't have seen him. This was on a friends farm. Only called one section on that farm. Snow was getting deep and I was getting tired quickly. I should of brought my snow shoes. 3rd stand, nothing. 4th stand, Nothing, but seen a ton of fox signs. Anyways, here are some pic's. Exit, looks worse then what it was, just a lot of blood since it was in the truck from around 10am-430pm. |
