New Camera

My family chipped in and bought me a new Canon S5 IS camera for my birthday. I was floored, needless to say.

So far, I'm still reading the instruction book (I'm like that) but... Wow!

This thing not only has bells and whistles, it has whistles ON the bells! For example, not only will it take movies up to an hour long (with audio) but it can take still pictures WHILE it's taking the movie! Holy moley!

Any professional comments, Skinny?

Hey Rocky, that looks like a nice camera. I'm used to shooting manual with my 5D and get lost with all those (fun) extras.

Check out these pages:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...canon_s5is.asp
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons5is/
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read...key=canon_s5is

DP Review is the reference for any new cameras we look at.
I'm partial to getting a new Powershot G9 for hunting and eBay photos, etc.
Do you have a www.photobucket.com account?
You can upload images and video to it for free.
That way you can put more than one image in a post (as opposed to the default single image attachment).
You can even post your own YouTube vids. Kewl...
Now before you think what would you do that for, think about demo'ing specific reloading techniques and great stuff like that. Things that lose something in the translation from the written word to the reloading bench.

Or start your own how-to vid posts in the reloading forum. Hmmm

Yup and yup, Skinny. I've done all those things before. The trouble is that I'd spend all my time taking illustrative pictures and posting them. I spend too much time typing just replies now (you have no idea how many emails a writer gets).

I'll be using the Canon to illustrate my reloading book, though. That was one of the reasons Claudia gave for buying it for me now - I've been talking about how photo-intensive the book will be.

Ha, Lets see, how about 3-400. That is my normal day. Course I am checking 2 additional computers by remote. Right now I am in my downtown office talking to you out of my branch office, 15 miles away.

Oh, I don't mean spam emails. I mean genuine, "Rocky, what's the best load for..." kind of question.

Then there are the editor emails. "Hey, where the heck is that article? Deadline was last week!"

Buried in there are emails asking about books, or from other combat vets, or from my family, or...

Ha, ha, ha
That number is with the spam filtered. At 400, that is only 50 messages per day per company. At 50, that is 6.2 per hour per company for an 8 hour day, but I work about 12-14 hours as the chief cook and bottle washer. Easy peezy.

Hey Rocky,

I have had the S3 IS for about 2 years now and still love it. I went from the 1 gig card to the 2 gig card about about 6 months ago. This allows me to take about 950 pic before card is full. I shoot a lot of pics while camping, fishing, parties or church gatherings, then I can go back and clear the blured or useless shots later. With film you have to be more picky about the shot. If you are shooting an action event outside or in good light inside you will like the Sport mode in the repeat shutter mode. My camera does more than I will ever use and can't imagine what else they could have added to your updated model. Have not read the manual yet ( i'm like that )

Allen
