7 RUM @ 1075 yards

Just put this quick video together from this weekend's hunt at my new spot. If you watch closely, you can pick up the bullet trace on the right side of the video, right in the middle.

We really weren't set up for videoing this day, but we just flipped a camera on and it came out ok anyhow. Didn't have the long range lense in the camera.

1. Leica Geovid, backed up with a Wild (bazoka looking thing in the picture that's pronounced "willed")
2. Bigbrother stole the thunder this day with his beautiful 1100 yard shot. He had 3 MOA of windage. When I was finished I ended up at 0, since wind was blowing in both directions. I'll let him tell his story, but I'll post some pictures. Wind was definitely a killer this day

His little 6.5 is definitely a shooter.

I was out yesterday with Ol_sparks .338 Tomahawk and we had one zeroed at 1550 yards. We had one shot just over it's back. The rest we couldn't get a bullet to it, b/c they were hitting tree limbs about 20' up and 30 yards out in front of the deer. With 59.5 ft of drop, I can see why. Only 210 more yards and we'd had been shooting 1 mile!!

I won't even mention the nice 8 pt I missed with a 700 yard cake shot We were watching 3 bucks all together and 2 of them started to spare a little bit, then the bigger 8 actually dropped his one horn right then and there. I figured I'd shoot him and pick his horn up b/c we knew right where he dropped it. I needed about 2ft of wind that I didn't account for and he sure didn't stick around for another shot. Pretty disheartening, but I walked all the way over there and picked up his shed horn.

It'll be a good story to tell the grandkids 20 yrs down the road.

I had one shot the other day at I think around 1375, I hit them time and time again with the leica 1200 and got the dreaded 3 dashes, finaly I moved down the hill and shot a patch of snow about 12x15" it was 1218, set the scope and watched the accubond plow through that lil patch of snow and wished I had a swuaro 1500!
well maybe santa will believe I been good enough for a new LRF.

Those Geovids are good out to about 1350. I was ranging a hemlock tree yesterday at 1379, but that's all I could get. Thank god we had the Wild or we would have never have got a range on that deer.

We watched the wind. Every once in a while we'd get 10 mph bursts, but it was a steady 3.5 to 4 mph SW wind. I just punched it into my Exbal program on my Dell Axim and it was right on when we were shooting. Too many trees, if you look at the one picture I posted in the thread "New Spot"..look thru the scope. That's what we were shooting into at 1550 yards.

BTW my 7 RUM load is 91.5gr of Retumbo, 180gr Berger VLD @ about 3210 fps.

Well, there's not much to my side of the story really. While Petey was out looking for lost antler, I spotted 2 deer coming off the top of the mountain through the big eyes. Olspark and I watched them for a few minutes as they settled down apparently thinking they were safe from those nasty hunters who chased them from the top. The lead deer stopped under a hemlock broadside and Olspark hit her with the Geovid at 1100 even. I put 28.5 MOA elevation and 3 MOA right windage on. The wind was hardly moving where we standing but we were having issues debugging it all morning as Petey eluded to. With the Leupold on 20x, I settled the crosshair center body at the back of the front leg and squeezed the shot nice and smooth. The little 140berger hit her 4th rib from the back taking out both lungs. It went completely through her and she jumped and run down the mountain about 50 yards or so. She stood there for a second then flopped over.

It was a pretty neat moment when Olspark says "she just fell over" to be honest. The retrieve was a lot nice than I'm used to as well as we drove to within 300 yards of where she was laying. No chest waders, big rope, torrent streams to cross!

All this being said, the 6.5x284 did it's job although in honesty, that's probably about the outer limit for this gun. I only run my chart to 1200 yards, not because I think I can't hit it, but because I've only got 750ft lbs of energy at that distance.

By the way, the other deer hung around long enough for us to get out the video camera and wait for Petey to get back and shoot
